How can you convert a "meat" recipe to one with a meat substitute?!

Question:

How can you convert a "meat" recipe to one with a meat substitute?

i saw a really healthy looking schicken recipe that i would like to make vegan... any ideas on how?

Answers:
You can just leave it out or use the same amount of tofu or Boca crumbles in place of the chicken. Another idea would be to pick your favorite vegetable that would go with the dish (ie broccoli, spinach, zucchini) and use that vegetable in the dish instead of the meat.

Just substitute the chicken for either a chicken substitute product or tofu. That should work.......you might have to adjust the cooking time a bit too!

Good luck!

Use the seasonings on a staple of your choice. Either soy, grains, potatoes, etc. It's interesting learning how to make a recipe fit your personal diet. There will be great surprises and some things not even your pet will eat!!! Good luck.

I discovered gluten in a health food store some years ago. I fried it and used it in spaghetti sauce and everyone thought it was ground meat. Tofu doesn't really fry up the same way, in my experience.

morningstar farms makes fake chicken strips that are seasoned. Sometimes the seasoning can throw a didh pff tough so sometimes i just run them under water before putting them in the dish.

I usually just use potato, beans, or mushrooms in place of meats, but there are fake meat products available-I just dont see the point of them

Bake some tofu for about 40 minutes at around 375-400 F. Let it cool then cut it up. This improves the texture and flavor. For even better results, first marinate it with lemon grass. The lemon grass flavor will cook out but the citric acid content neutralizes the tofu making it succulent. It is a bit of work.

You can use tofu, soy products, breads or whatever you feel confortable with cooking.

Morningstar Farms makes fake chicken strips that are vegan. They contain some garlic and could make for a gassy gassy evening, but the texture is very chicken like. I made "chicken" and dumplings with them. If you plan to cook them in something soup like, fry the strips in a pan with some vegetable oil to firm them up and make them hold their texture.

Many chicken recipes such as chicken nuggets can be made into veggie recipe.. I make golden nuggets they have nothing added in them. Or some times I make mushroom nuggets. Or black eyed nuggets. I use pancake or griddle cake batter! If I use mushroom or black olives I dip them in flour then drop in batter and fry in pan!
They get done very quick! Medium heat is best!
