Retorts for meat-eaters.?!

Question:

Retorts for meat-eaters.?

Since becoming a vegetarian I've lost count of the amount of stupid questions and veiled criticisms I've recieved from the omnivores around me.
So far, I've managed to google good answers to things like 'how do you know that plants don't feel pain?' and 'what difference does it make?', but one thing that I'm a bit stuck on is the question of meat substitutes.
Whenever I have something like quorn or soya mince my brothers always accuse me of being a hypocrite and say that it defeats the object of giving meat up in the first place. Does anyone have a good retort for this?

Thanks for the advice everyone! Okay, I admit it, I probably should stop rising to the bait but it’s so bloody annoying when family members insist on teasing me at many a meal on the grounds of “living on rabbit food” (Has anyone else noticed that people always tend to blame diet whenever you get ill? I had a cold for a couple of days once and my Mum was adamant it was due to lack of protein. Aghhh!).

Sian,
Quorn is a trademark name for a vegetable protein used as a meat substitute. Soya mince is basically how it sounds: mince made from soy.
Answers to other criticisms that us veggies always seem to get can be found on these websites:

I’ve also recently heard about a book called ‘Living among meat eaters’ by Carol Adams which is supposed to offer good advice.

Yes, definitely. Stop defending yourself. You (and probably they also) know that your choice was a healthy one. You have no need to defend it. Be happy and proud of your good choice. As long as you have retorts, people will keep teasing you. Stop playing their game.

what exactly are quorn and soya mince? I might be able to think of something then
Just say it's up to me if I want to eat dead animals or not
I think I want to be vegetarian the only meat I eat are chicken and sausages and that's only coz when I was little I didn't realise chicken the food and chicken the animal were the same thing then you grow up used to eating it
By the way what are your good answers to the other criticisms?

I wouldn't bother with a retort. You are then only bringing yourself down to their level. Hold your head up high and be proud to be veggie!

BTW - I am a meat eater but love quorn and veggies!

Well considering it's not meat, I hardly see how it defeats the purpose of giving up meat. No animal had to die for your veggie burger, mission accomplished in my opinion.

Also understand that the flavorings and seasonings on meat are more often than not, Vegan. The flavors people associate with meat are quite often vegan friendly.

You don't have to answer to him. It's your choice. I'm a meat-eater and I repect vegetarians even though I don't agree with them. he should learn to do the same.

Say "How does it defeat the purpose? Nothing had to bleed or die in order for me to satisfy my appetite." Its a little hard to find fault with that. Or say, "It tastes just as good, but is not decaying animal flesh" Good luck. Isnt it stupid to have to defend what you choose to eat?

tell him that we have to occasionally eat meat substitutes because meat eaters cannot comprehend a meal without meat. We do it just to stop them having a nervous breakdown.

or, just tell them to f**k off, its nothing to do with them.

Ir, just say "so what, veggie is about not eating animals, where does it say about eating this stuff ?" ( shoving it in his face )

Thier guilt and insecurity makes me laugh

Those things are NOT meat though so how can you be hypocrite? A hypocrite says one thing and does the opposite...but you are not doing the opposite.

A hypocrite to me is someone who claims to "love" animals and then eats them.

Well quorn or soya is not meat so just explain that to him

tell them that meat is is the way to go.

why defend yourself....I congratulate you on your healthy food choices.
I'm a vegetarian.....my family and friends know it, accept it, and support me.
Because they love me.

Just smile like you have inside information.....when they see how healthy you stay they may have 2nd thoughts!
You could say....well, lets see who gets sick first....

Theyre just jealous

Yes, you enjoy your meat i enjoy my plant life.

If a human body was meant to only eat vegetables we would have been equipped with shorter grinding teeth. Only carnivores have large tearing and slashing teeth. If we don't get to use them on poor defenceless animals how do we justify expensive dentist bills?

Tell them you don't want to eat sh!t-fed,hormone and antibiotic filled, unsanitary, rotting, decaying, flesh that came from an animal that suffered it's whole life and was knee deep in sh!t and had to lay down in it's own urine while being crowded around hundreds(even thousands) of other animals that never saw the light of day.

Or tell them it's like drinking diet coke, diet coke doesn't have all the sugar and what not that regular coke has,the meat substitute doesn't have all the artery clogging cholesterol, all the saturated fat,and all the calories that real meat has,but it still has the protein and other nutrients.

i gett the same thing at the dinner table. but i certainly cant contend with the anwers already given !!

I am not a vegetarian and I hate being called a carnivore. I suppose an omnivore is slightly better.
There are three reasons why people don't eat meat, in my opinion. One: They don't want to eat animals.
Two: They believe that meat is unhealthy to eat.
Three: It's a fad, a statement.

It gets complicated when you combine the reasons, but provided you stick to your point, you can have a comeback to your brother quite simply by repeating your viewpoint.
He thinks you're a hypocrite because you eat fake meat? Well, you need protein and you love your food and this to you is an acceptable alternative. End of story. Don't rise to his jibes.

Are you enjoying your half-burned dead pig?
