I have been a vegetarian for almost a year. Not a long time. I am only 14 years old, and I don't know what to do. I mean I don't want to quit beeing a vegetarian, it is cool. My little brother shoves meat in my face, so I punch him. When ever I see meat i almost puck. All I eat for dinner is toast, rise snakes, or sometimes a sandwitch when my family has meat. I have lost a lot of weight this last year. Now I am under weight. What can I eat for dinner when my family is eating meat for dinner????? HELP!!!

What I want to know is, what kind of ridiculous parents do you have who don't provide a form of protein and a well balanced diet for you? At 14, you're not capable of "taking care of yourself" in any respect. Your parents should take your choice to be a vegetarian seriously (especially considering you've been this way for a year, and they probably realize at this point it's not just another teenage "phase"), and provide a nutritious, meat-free dinner for you.
fish! and protein shakes... u need to take that since u are no longer getting your protein from meat. so those are important!

Discover Indian food if you haven't already. I could never remain a vegetarian without that. Mexican concoctions with Avocado, beans, etc. also work... forget the rice cakes and the toast!

There are so many great things to eat that are vegetarian, it really not that hard! Simple things like pasta with tomato sauce, mac and cheese, veggie burgers, chilli, vegetables, soups, salads, stirfrys.. the list goes on!
You need to eat dinner!
Ideas:
-- Sandwiches with substance (peanut butter, Nutella, fake meat if you like the stuff)
-- Veggie burger (2 minutes in a microwave and you're good)
-- Pasta (you can make spaghetti with almost no effort)
-- Soup from a can
-- Salad, preferably with nuts or another form of protein in it
If your family is not preparing healthy veggie meals for you, you have to step it up and prepare some yourself...you need to maintain your strength and energy for punching your brother!

I am a vegetarian too! you can eat beans, cheese, yogurt.egg whites,peanuts or soy. Just things with lots of protein basically.

Where is your mom that she won't help you. ? Oh well. Eat hard boiled eggs. Make a sandwich. Peanut butter and banana sandwich. Lots of veg. and rice or pasta. cream sauces on them. Fish, sardines, kippers, tuna. Beans, pinto, white . lintels, garbanzos. There is a point that you seem to have reached, where being a veg. is harmful to you. When you can not take the responsibility to do your own cooking and shopping,you should stay with the family's eating habits. At this point you may need a doctor.
Are you able to buy your own food, and replace ricecakes with something more substantitive, like fresh fruit. You can always suppilment your diet with protien shakes, eat more beans, five bean salad (once again instead of ricecakes... and are you Vegitarian or Vegan, because you could still eat eggs, and fish on an average Vegitarian diet, Vegan though you are more needing Tofu, and Soy as a mosr substantitive protien replacement. Peanut Butter is also a great choice for the protien if you can get the fresh ground stuff at the local food co-op. Your choices are limited by your budget or your parents budget... Peace
Is your family willing to support your decision? If not, my sympathies because it is better if everyone understands your choices. Let them know that you are interested in getting proper nutrition. If they see that you are serious and are willing to work with you, they could fix extra portions of side dishes like potatoes, pasta, or vegetables when they cook meat. You could eat the sides. Toast is not enough!
If they don't have enough side dishes to feed you and they can't prepare special vegetarian meals for you, you will have to learn to cook for yourself. Here are some simple things you can make:
Pasta: Boil several cups of water in a pot. When the water is boiling and bubbling up a lot, put in some pasta and let it cook in the uncovered pot for 10 minutes or so. Drain and serve. You could eat it with non-meat tomato sauce, cheese, or less common things like black beans or vegetables
Beans: It's very important to get protein through beans. The easiest way to cook them is to buy a can, open it, and dump the contents into a small pot. Canned beans only need to be heated for a couple of minutes on a high heat setting. You don't need a lid for the pot. You could put them in the microwave for 3-5 minutes too, if you prefer to heat them that way. There is a wide variety of kinds available.
Rice: To cook regular white rice, just remember to use 2 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice. Boil the water in an uncovered pot on high heat, pour in the rice, then turn the heat down to low and cover the pot. Cook on low for about 20 mintues with the lid on. If you have instant rice, follow the instructions on the box instead.
Frozen vegetables: You can follow the package directions, but most frozen vegetables will be fine if you just pour them into some boiling water for anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. There's a lot of leeway here.
Baked Potato: Poke holes in it with a knife or fork, then put it in the microwave for 10-12 minutes (more for a bigger potato). Add toppings like cheese, broccoli, or sour cream if you want.
Most of these foods will taste good if you combine them together. Try to get enough fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, and dairy if you can. Be creative with what you have, and ask your parents to help you stay healthy. Good luck!

you can ask your family to cook some of these dishes every now and then because they ARE veggie dishes but can be enjoyed by all!

So if you browse other restraunt sites like this as well you will see it is easy to find great things on the menu for vegetarians. Also you can eat whatever you want so a little chicken or beef every now and then won't hurt! Also for more recipes search on Yahoo! or Google!
If you need more nutrition then try some nuts, beans, fruit, and milk! These things will help you gain some weight along with being healthy!
Also make sure you get all the food groups! Since you do not like meat eat other things from that group like nuts and beans!

Have your mom buy the fake meat stuff from the supermarket. Then it will feel like you are eating what the family is eating but it is really meatfree.

Little girl, I'm concerned you have an eating disorder that you haven't asked your parents for help with this and they apparently don't know that your health is suffering. Better address this ASAP or wait to become vegetarian until you have the smarts to figure out how to take care of yourself if you won't get help.
you could learn to cook some simple dishes. My 12 year old vegetarian daughter loves to cook. She makes mac and cheese, curried cous cous, spanish rice, fried breaded mushrooms and okra, stuffed jalapeno peppers, omelets, etc. Just get a basic cook book from the library, and have at it. There are so many nutritious and fun things you can make for yourself. Punching your brother is only going to make him do it more. Show some maturity, and next time he shoves meat in your face, pat his head and tell him what a nice boy he is (with a sincere smile) THAT will get him worse than punching him, trust me. You have made a mature decision to be vegetarian, so its time to act more mature in other ways too. Make yourself a salad with cheese and eggs, sandwiches, mix yourself drinks with calories (smoothies), and try to eat something calorie rich with the side dishes. Tell your mom to get you some veggie patties and veggie/soy dogs so you can have something meatlike when your family is having meat. There is lots of frozen vegetarian stuff in good grocery stores. Ask your mom if you could go shopping with her and look around in the vegetarian food isle if you find something that looks interesting to you! Try stuff and cook for your family so you get your vegetarian diet and they see how good food can be without meat. It might happen that they diminuish their meat consume. My family did it and is nearly vegetarian and my family with whom I live now has cut down on meat too, it works!
