I want to become a vegitarian.?!
I want to become a vegitarian.?
I understand that my body will need extra vitamens and suppliments, but is becoming a vegitarian expensive? For example, would buying soymilk cost more than buying regular milk?
Any feedback welcome.
Answers:
The expense that occurs when being a vegetarian is you're using fresh ingredients...the vegetables. This is offset, however, by not purchasing meat. So, it really is a wash.
You should be taking vitamins whether you are a vegan or not. If you're not then you should begin to because no one gets 100% of what they need out of food (any food).
and..Soymilk....it's gross. It doesn't taste like milk. Either does rice milk. Would you necessarily have to give up dairy products to become vegetarian? I don't think so.
Good Luck
per volume, yes soy milk is more expensive than regular cow milk, but I believe if your goal is to eat well, you'll be spending about as much money, if not a little less eating completely vegetarian.
i dont know about the soy milk cuz i still drink milk and eat eggs, but i dont think its expensive, im a thirteen year old vegitarian, andi just dont eat the meat from the meals my mom makes,
beans r a great sourse of protein, replace the meat with some beans!
Health food from a health food store is wicked overpriced.
Only Vegans need to take vitamin supplements, vegetarians just get thin and weak.
i think they are around the same price..
i don't drink soymilk,
but i do drink lactaid milk which is usually right next to soy milk...and i really do see a big difference in price, just popularity.
its really not, its cheaper to buy veggies than meat, but if you go out and eat its harder, especially if you have other health things, like being lactose intolerant to any degree, or high blood sugar, it complicates things alot..but if its something you believe in, doesn't matter.
I've been vegetarian from birth. I've never had meat in my life. It's easier if your parents are like mine, but if they aren't, you better have accepting parents. Anyway, soy milk is great if you get used to it, and so is substitute meat. People say (wouldn't know) that it tastes just like the real thing. :) Good luck w/ it!
Well in your example, you ask about soy milk, Usually yes soy milk is a little more expensive than cows milk. I guess because there is less demand for it... But for instance if you are buying Silk soy milk, then you will be paying more... But if you buy a store brand soy milk then you will save a little money usually. But alot of times soy milks go on sale. Like recently silk went on sale for like $2.50. That is a ok price here... because honestly I like silk the best... but I don't buy it often cause I am poor...lol.
So typically vegan and vegetarian foods are a little more money. But as far as produce... rice... beans... they are obviously the same price:)
I buy some of my produce at little markets(for example, I don't know where you live, but I live in Philadelphia, and I shop at The 9th street market...it is like all outside markets and stuff... or I shop at this Vietnamese supermarket... they have cheap produce, maybe you could find cool little places like that, cause regular supermarkets tend to be more expensive)
And you can get like cans of beans cheap anywhere. so, you'll just have to look around, and be aware of sales on vegetarian and vegan foods(like soy milk and stuff)
Good Luck on becoming a vegetarian.
If you eat a well balance diet, including leafy greens, whole grains such as quinoa and millet, seeds, nuts, pulses, legumes, and fresh fruits and vegetables, you wont need supplements. Fresh juicing is a great way to get all you need. Twice a day, I juice a combination of things, such as carrots, celery, cucumber, parsley, swiss chard, and apple, and I feel great and take no supplements. Soy milk is more expensive if store bought, but for around 50 dollars you can get a soy milk maker and make it for about 25 cents a gallon at home. I avoid soy because much of it has been genetically modified and causes allergies-I have developed a severe allergy to it. I make rice, almond, cashew, and sesame milk at home. I like being able to mix and control the flavors, and by using organic ingredients, I know I am getting good stuff-not over pasturized milks with added ingredients. Make sure you educate yourself on hidden sources of animal products-its everywhere! Gelatine, jello, "natural" flavors or colors, diglycerides, rennet (in cheese, marked as "enzymes") . Animal things are hidden in things you think are good for you, such as gelatine in some yogurts, etc. It takes some research, but once you know, you know what to avoid. Good luck!
Maybe you need to look at it as clean eating and start with making healthier choices..its hard to jump right in and quick all together. .Just start buy making some changes and eating healthier and you can move into more vegitarian meals as you learn.
Regular Soy milk is not good but the Chocolate flavor one is great.
It is more expensive. Soy milk is a bit more expensive than cow's milk. It is also a little more expensive buying more fruits and vegetables, nuts and beans to make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need. I would recommend talking to you doctor to make sure you are getting the right vitamins and minerals you need. They might be able to recommend a good vitamin suppliment to take along with your new diet, just to be sure you are getting everything you need. Also, shop around for good values. I shop at 3 or 4 different grogery stores to get great deals on fresh and organic produce. Safeway can be good and so can P.C. Market of Choice. Try a local Farmer's Market, too.
I hope you enjoy being a vegetarian as much as I do.
