I want to be a vegetarian but I love meat. How can I learn to live without it?!

Question:

I want to be a vegetarian but I love meat. How can I learn to live without it?

I watched some videos online yesterday about how they kill animals that we eat and it is so gross. And they told about how the animals are injected with drugs and it makes me sick to think about what I am eating. All those toxins!
But do the meat alternatives taste just as good? What about tofu and the meat substitutes they make? Is it good?

Answers:
Just eat a bit less until you feel like you don't need it anymore, or try to replace it with other foods you enjoy, and if you've got to have meat, I would suggest trying the great selection of fake meats offered these days, I personally don't think I could have become Vegetarian without feeding meat urges with fake meat, I really love Morning Star's stuff, you can find it in most super market freezer sections too.
Also, think of the many benefits of a healthier lifestyle rich in fruits and veggies :] Good luck.

Think about what you're eating.

Hamburger.. think that you're eating a smelly cow
Bacon--- ugg that disgusting dirty pig
Leg of Lamb... how could anybody harm a lamb..
think of Mary and how it followed her to
school one day...

I am a vegetarian and I eat tofu all the time. It's great!

Stick with the meat...they all have to die SOMEHOW, you know. We've eaten meat for thousands of years...and it wasn't til the advent of the teddy bear til we started perceiving animals as "cute" and started anthropomorphizing our dinners. It's ridiculous.

I watched the 'Meet your Meat" videos on line. I don't love meat anymore- and I'm becoming a vegetarian tommorow! Morning Star Farms make good products, and you can research online to see what is available! Your local supermarket probably has excellent alternatives (like products made out of textured vegetable protien).

some people who are vegetarians will tell you that you will have to incorporate peanut butter and and fish for protein in your diet plus you will need to eat more beans tofu if cooked right can be ok but grocery store also have really good menu ideals in the frozen section hope this helps

there is no substitute for the meat.....either you eat it or you dont....nothing can come close to the taste of a rare steak or pork chop.....so, its your choice....lamb chops or broculli....good luck

Some of the meat alternatives aren't to shabby! I am not a vegetarian, but I still like to buy meatless products from time to time. My favorite is Morning Star's Buffalo Chick wings. You'd be amazed how close to the real thing they are! Boca also has a number of products that are not to bad either. It's really not hard to learn to cook vegetarian. I had a roommate who was a vegetarian and we cooked for each other all the time. You can buy vegetable boullion or vegetable stock to use in soups. Tofu is great because it takes on the taste of whatever you season it with. Just make sure you are eating enough protein if you are cutting meat out of your diet completley. You also might want to talk to your doc or a nutritionist about a vitamin supplement. (a lot of vegetarians are anemic because they don't get enough iron). Try www.allrecipes.com for good vegetarian recipes. It's a great site, and it's free. I use it ALL the time for meat and non-meat recipes.

You Need meat ! Don't stop eating it. Just buy either organic or all natural.
And it would be better if everyone complain about that, do a referendum or something. They passed a law not long ago about trans fat. What not do the same bout the way they take care of the animals and what they give to them. And they should include the sugar in absolutely everything you eat !!

To come back to the subject, I truly believe you shouldn't exclude meat from your diet. If you live in a rural area, maybe try to find a little farmer who has his own animals. That's what I was doing when I lived in Minneapolis

Good luck

Yes I believe that meat substitutes for vegetarians are improving their tastes. When you want to become vegetarian, you should be fully devoted to it and be open to different kinds of veggie experiences. It's actually fun being a vegetarian. I've tasted some veggie meats and they're not half bad. In fact, I'm craving right now, lol. It also depends on how they're cooked because veggie meat alone with no spices doesn't tastes that good but when they are cooked well then you wouldn't notice the difference. Go for it.

Meat alternatives are tasty!
I suggest quorn, because as a meat-eater, i don't notice any difference, and regularly eat it as an alternative.

Meat is an important part of your diet, and the vitamins in it are responsible for keeping you fit and healthy, so make sure that if you do turn vegetarian, take a trip to your doctor's surgery to get some supplements.

I was at the store today and they had cheese flavored veggatables so they have a meat substitute for almost everything

If you can't give up meat, raise and process your own.

To be honest, not to discourage you, but I don't think that the veggie beef things are all that good.
The veggie "chicken" nuggets from morning star farms are awesome, I bet you will have a hard time telling whether it is a real chicken nugget or not...lol(I'm a vegan now though and they have milk and eggs :( )
You would have to try some of them, because some vegetarians (and meat- eaters) really like the meat subtitutes.
It is all about what you like.
You know what else is really good, portabello mushroom burgers, just grill one up, and slap in on some bread.
Also other things make good burgers, like eggplant, and squash. Again just grill it up and you have a burger.
And Tofu is good.

Hope this stuff helps you make the transitition.

everytime u want 2 eat a hamburger, name it. u cant eat something u named
just like when u find a stray dog, ur never supposed 2 name it.

meat is an addiction, so is cooked foods, suger, etc.
do a juice fast, not only will it help eliminate the toxins that r already in your body, but help take away the meat cravings

oh yeah, for a meat substitute, try dehydrated portibella mushrooms or maybe seitan, wich taste more like beef than tofu does (and dosn't give u the stomach ach like tufo does 2 some pppl)

Come off it slowly - learn to cook some good alternatives. What do you like eating besides meat? The best curries are vegetarian. Italian food is often meat-free. Pretend meats are ok if you're eating with meateaters a lot (eg your family have sausage and mash - then vegy sausages are useful as you can have the same veg as them). Otherwise, it's easier not to think along the 'meat + 2 veg' carnivore style of cooking. For instance, pasta with fresh vegetable sause, gnocci with cheese sauce, ratatoille, roast veg with grilled haloumi. Why not just start by thinking which side of the meat industry you dislike most (eg - factory reared poultry) and stop eating that kind of meat. A big change in your eating habits might have to be gradually - eatings a really social thing so you need to think about your family and friends. Learn to cook and be proative about changing your diet. Iw as in your situation 10 years ago - I havent eaten meat since and I'm really healthy and a great cook now!
