Have you ever thought you were eating vegetarian food, but it wasn't???!

Question:

Have you ever thought you were eating vegetarian food, but it wasn't???

yes, i have. you're gonna think this is stupid, but i was eating chicken flavored ramen noodles for a while. i was thinking that the 'chicken flavor' was a fake flavor.

i was eating hamburger helper-beef stroganoff. i thought the actual beef in beef stroganoff only came from the actual beef that you put in the helper. i was using fake meat instead. then i read the box.

then, omg, i read or heard somewhere that mcdonald's *used* to use beef flavoring to season their FRENCH FRIES. this is why you shouldn't believe everything on the net, because guess what-they still do. actually, after visiting their site just now to get the links for you to see for yourself, it says that the beef flavoring uses wheat??? so, see my other question-i will post the link to it later in the additional details section.

mcdonald's beef flavoring in french fries question

Yes, unfortunately it has happened occasionally, mostly when eating out. I have consumed enchilada sauce that contained chicken stock, "vegetarian" Thai and Chinese dishes that actually contained oyster sauce, soups with hidden chicken or beef stock, vegetarian pizza with MEAT SAUCE (who uses meat sauce on pizza?), and McDonald's French fries with beef extract. I have pretty much given up on eating soup when dining out unless I am at a vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly restaurant. I have found it helpful to study recipes to learn what typically goes into certain dishes, so I can know what to look out for.

Once I thought I was, but when I looked down it was not a peach, but a human head.

Somebody gave me a bowl of soup which turned out to be chicken. But I realised straight away because it had that horrible taste that meat gets when you've been off it for years.

A "friend" gave me a jelly snake and told me it didn't have gelatine in it <_<

your question is messing up my computer.....did you know JELLO is a meat product

I love eating dead cow so I've never personally had the problem you refer too, sorry. Oops, gotta run...my steak's ready.

I like eating dead flesh,so I can't help you with your question

Yup certain restaurants use bacon to make BBQ sauce! If it's made from scratch it's actually very common, we do at my work and I had no Idea until I read the recipe, and I am a cook there, LOL! Also many places use chicken stock to make their rice, or even add some into their mashed potatoes, what can you do but announce you are a vegetarian and hope for the best!

Yes, some times you think you are not knowing you are not, most especially when you don't know or have the recipe of how the food is being prepared. That is why i will advise that you ask any time you are in doubt.

My gf gave me some vegetable enchiladas from Trader Joes that turned out to have chicken stock in them. My gf gave me some chocolate cake from Trader Joes that turned out to have gelatin in it. I told my gf not to give me stuff from Trader Joes anymore.

I am veggie of 25 yrs and glad to see that you are checking your food for healthy eating. It is a regular occurrence the trick to eating out is to ask, if they give you an answer that you are not convinced with then don't eat there again. Eat with your Feet so to speak. It your money they count on so spend it where you want. I am not sure how old you are but when your are out in the shop read the labels on any can your interest will not be wasted. The new labelling system in Britain is amazing for info. Personally I avoid any thing With Enumbers in it as well as Monsodiumglutamate. They are not so good for the Brain cells. The more we buy product with out preservative the more will become available the companies have to maintain their PROFITS! If you want to improve the food at Macdonalds write to them and tell them what you want. Remember Information is the best protection in all walks of life, Why is a great word.

well i have experienced this and even i was gonna ask this question but then i saw urs and wanted to answer wat i think about this matter
once i was eating one umm veg burger and suddenly i saw one big pig behind me and when i was gonna run away i woke up just to see that the workers of the restaurant were trying to wake me up.

this happened because i am a asthema patient and this often happens that i faint.
this is my big answer and the most dreadful time of my life.

Mine are not things I've eaten, but surprising things you don't think of. I was given a box of microwave popcorn, when I read the label it didn't have dairy, but did have fish. Things with carmine, non-vegan fruit juice always makes me groan. I shouldn't have to worry about juice. Some "thai noodle cart" noodles are labeled as vegan but have honey in them. Not all wines are vegan, some have gelatin, casein and albumen among other things. I could go on forever....but I'll just frustrate myself. :)

Don't forget to check the ingredients of the frozen ones at the grocery store too..

I used to love cream of broccoli soup in this certain restaurant, then found out most of this type of soup has chicken broth in it unless you make it yourself from vegetable stock.

no, I dont worry about eating something accidently because I don't use processed food, and make everything from scratch using ingredients I know and trust. You can rest assured that if you are using boxed, processed stuff, or frozen pre made meals, that at least one of the ingredients comes from animal source. Also, if you use any "enriched" products, like pasta, cereal, flour, etc., then most likely the vitamins they are "enriched" with are from animal sources, as are most store bought vitamins, unless clearly marked otherwise. Same goes for things like toothpaste, cosmetics, shampoos, household cleansers, etc. Dead animals are everywhere

yes I have eaten cake but it had beef in it.

When I was an Ovo- Lacto vegetarian, My mom made me some fettucine alfredo and I started eating it, and for whatever reason my mom decided to put hamburger in it.(maybe to tourture me) anyway, with my mom you can't just spit out food she makes right in front of her, so I waited till she turned her head, and I spit it in a napkin...... but she saw me. She started screaming at me, saying,"How Dare You!!!" she refused to admit that there was meat in it, even after I showed her the huge chunk of meat.
Oh and right after I became a vegan, I wasn't to good at remembering to read labels yet. And I started eating this rice stuff at a friends house and I asked what it was made with, She said Cream of mushroom soup, And like an idiot, I keep eating.then I think about it... cream.... of mushroom. Ahhh I was so upset.... but I forgave myself, lol.

Yes, I ordered Potato Soup at some restaurant and I specificly asked the waiter if it had any meat in it, and he assured me it didn't but after the first few bites I noticed there was bits if bacon in it :[
So I told him and I didn't have to pay.
