What percentage of university students are vegetarian?!

Question:

What percentage of university students are vegetarian?

My mum once quoted me a figure of 25% but it seems pretty high. Also, what is the percentage of vegetarians overall in the world?

Answers:
That percentage seems a little high for a university. Remember that 25% is 1 out of every 4 students. There is no way the university would make any money off of the university delis and sub shops. I imagine the percentage is drastically lower. Definitely not accurate for america, maybe some place like india.

In america, it's said that about 1 - 2.8% of adults are vegetarians who do NOT eat fish, poultry, or red meat. Very small number.

4-10% of Americans claim to be vegetarians, but they actually still eat fish and poultry.

I'm not sure exactly what the world percentage is, but I know that about 70% of the world vegetarians are Indian.

In a study about 16 years ago, there was a claim that 25% of the world was vegetarian. I think it may have been a mishap because the only country with a large population of vegetarians is India. Hong Kong, China, and Japan have VERY large populations but only 1.5% claimed to be vegetarian.

There may be a maximum of 15% of vegetarians worldwide, but I'm sure the number is much lower.

As for american universities, probably not even 1%, sadly.

Let's go with one percent. And in the world, even less. Most people are supporters of PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals).

I am in University and I haven't met many vegetarian students. I live in a university town and the most vegetarian-unfriendly places are bars and clubs where students hang out. Some of the upperscale bars don't have a single veggie item on their menu.
