Why is it okay to eat fish during lent, but not meat?!

Question:

Why is it okay to eat fish during lent, but not meat?

Answers:
Fish is meat and it's NEVER okay for vegetarians to eat any kind of meat including fish!

Source(s):
Vegetarians do not eat fish. A fish eater is a Piscivore. Spread the correct word!

Because

That is what i heard, though i am not catholic.

when you give up something for lent..
meat was picked to give up by the Church.

fish is not considered meat

It's another dumb rule that doesn't make sense that the catholic church made up. I think they made all these rules up as a joke to see if people would actually follow them just because they say to.

It has something to do with not eating animals of the earth. And the fact of the parable in the Bible of the fish, loaves of bread, and wine.

Back in the day, to have meat for dinner was a special occasion. During Lent, people make sacrifices to honor Christ for his sacrifice. On Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during lent, catholics are supposed to fast and not eat meat as a sacrifice.

yeah, dont question "gods" will

read the bible, and attend a catholic church service during lent

i don't think so. fish is still an animal sacrifice.

It does not include all of lent, just Ash Wdnesday and the fridays in lent. I'm not sure exactly why, but I think it has something to do with sacrificing something like Jesus sacrificed his life. Fish apparantly has always been a Holy food and is exempt from sacrifice. Maybe it was a way to promote Friday Fish Frys at the Church! LOL

I know it is stupid, isn't it?
I could go into the reasons why I think that the church makes it okay to eat fish... but I don't want to offend anyone, so I will just keep my mouth shut here.

The Catholic Church's abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cattle or pigs-all of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat. Fish are a different category of animal.

It is a small reminder for catholics of the sacrifice Jesus made for them by dieing on the cross for their sins. And Easter (the end of lent)is the celebration of his Resurrection.
P.S. Fish are cold blooded and cows, pig, chicken are all warm blooded.

This is a religious reason, its not stupid. Back then fish was peasants food, and meat was expensive food. So for lent, middle and upper class people learn to appreciate and understand the peasants condition by eating fish, which was considered poor people's food.

FISH IS MEAT
are u a pescatarian ?
( it means a veg who eats fish)

Fish is still an animal product. But I'd think that this question would be best asked on the religion & spirituality board.

i really dont know the answer to your question, but i saw many vegitarians eat fish they say its not meat so maybe it has something to do with your question.
