Why can I no longer eat cooked tomatoes?!

Question:

Why can I no longer eat cooked tomatoes?

Since I became a vegetarian 3 months ago, I find that when I eat cooked tomatoes/sauce in spaghetti, pizza, etc., I get terribly sick to my stomach for several hours. When I eat raw tomatoes in salad, salsa, etc., I'm fine. I have given up the cooked tomatoes for now, but I am wondering if anyone has an idea of why my body changed this way.
Thanks.

All your posts (except 1, and you know who you are...lol) helped and got me thinking. I make the sauce myself at home, but I have been putting dried fake hamburger mix in the sauces. Maybe the soy in that is the problem rather than the tomatoes. I'll keep experimenting.

The acids in tomatoes are more pronounced in cooked recipes than in raw foods. So there are three things you can do:

Add a little sugar to the recipe to offset the acid.

Eat papaya enzyme after eating the sauce. I like American Health which you can find at any Vitamin Shoppe store or online. BTW, this is a great product that cuts gas and prevents heartburn.

And finally, give up the tomato based recipes. Try the other two first though.

In Colonial days, they thought tomatoes were poisonous. Turns out, they were eating them on pewter plates and the acid from the tomatoes interacted with the pewter to make people sick.

your the psychologist person, so you can figure it out! Cooking tomatoes would not be enough to change them. It is perhaps the texture or an association, particularly the smell you are associating with a different sensation. Dont worry live dangerously risk tomatoes, is it the cooked cheese or something else you eat ?

Yes, cooked tomatoes are very acidic, acidic enough to eat through a can, therefore cans for tomatoes have a coating on the inside. Cooking will turn most things acidic, but some more than others. That is one of the main reasons that cooked food is bad for us because our bodies are meant to be more on the alkaline side.

Tomatoes are also from the nightshade family. The non-berry (botanically, tomatoes are berries) part of the plant is poisonous to humans, and of course small amounts of this will be present in the berry too, which could also contribute to reactions -- usually those who have allergies to tomatoes.

It could be an allergy or sensitivity. If you have added alot of soy to your diet, you may have built up an intollerance for it. Canned tomatoes are high in amines, which can cause all sorts of problems by causing your body to release histamines. I am the opposite, I can have ketchup or canned tomato, but a fresh tomato is a thing of the past, sadly. Try an elimination diet for 6 weeks, then try adding it back in. Also, there may be another ingredient you are allergic to-check the label. Good luck

If this is occuring while you eat out, there is a very good chance that the sauces contain meat.

I don't really know why cooked tomatoes are different but they definitely are. I eat at least one a day, I slice them and cook them.

My stomach always always always hurts afterwards.

I have always thought it was something else that could be making me sick, but maybe this is it.

I just thought I'd let you know you're not the only person going through that, my vegetarian friend.
