Why are "they" feeding dogs grain and cattle meat protein?!

Question:

Why are "they" feeding dogs grain and cattle meat protein?

Answers:
If you're referring to dog food containing grain and animal by-products it's because dogs are NOT natural carnivores, they're natural omnivores (in the wild dogs DO frequently eat vegetable matter including grasses and fruits!).

If you meant to also ask why cattle are being fed animal proteins you've gotten two incorrect answers. It is NOT illegal to feed animal by-products to cattle! All that was (in theory) banned is feeding cattle cow meat!

Cattle are fed animal by-products because it's cheap! The way it works nowadays is that cattle slaughterhouse waste is fed to pigs/sheep/poultry/fish. The slaughterhouse waste from those animals is then included in cattle feed. It's just a cheap way to dispose of ____ that can't legally be fed to people!

Just like people, cows are now omnivores by practice!

Vegetarians do not eat fish. A fish eater is a Piscivore. Spread the correct word!

Because dogs need protein and some vegetable matter to maintain their health. Dogs are carnivores that need primarily meat in their diet with added vitemins and minerals since we don't generally feed them whole animals. The grains are there for digestive and bowel health.

They always have. Dog are carnivores and do eat some vegetation.

Because they're not trying to fatten dogs up and eat them like they do with cattle.

It is illegal to feed cattle (or any other farm animal) meat, so get your facts straight. This is because feeding meat to pigs was how foot and mouth started in 2001.

As for dog food containing grain, it's simply a cheap filler.

It is illegal to feed meat to cows, so I am not certain where you obtained that information.

As for dogs, as a canine nutritional consultant for pet food companies, that I can help you with. Dogs are indeed carnivores that should be fed a diet with animal based protein as the main ingredient, such as chicken, beef, fish, venison, etc.

However, they also require carbohydrates and fiber in their diets. The four corners of canine nutrition are Protein, Fat (a dog burns fat for energy), carbs and fiber. A properly processed grain such a rice or corn can be an easily digestible form of carbohydrates.

Now, if you feed your dog whole corn, no, your dog will not be able to digest it...(either will you, for that matter). But when corn, rice and other carbs are dried, cooked and properly processed, they are a good source of energy for your pet.

Word of caution: while it IS important for your dog to have carbs, do not feed your dog a food where corn, rice, wheat or other carb source is the main ingredient, unless your dog is on a weight management/loss formula. When you see carbs as the first ingredient, typically you are looking at the carb source being used as a filler, not as a nutritionally needed ingredient.

its utterly ridiculous, isn't it? Dogs need meat, and cows need grass, but dog food is mostly grain based, and cows are fed an unnatural diet of grains (loaded with pesticides) and ground up other dead animals. Too stupid for words. I am fairly certain that "they" sit around a large table with a communal crack pipe!
