Why do people prefer Non - vegetarian food over vegetarian foods?!

Question:

Why do people prefer Non - vegetarian food over vegetarian foods?

Answers:
I think because at least in the US, we're not used to cooking creatively. I am a BIG foodie, and if you eat Indian a lot, especially South Indian, you'll run into a LOT of vegetarian stuff that's delicious and nutritious. But if all you do is drop the meat from your diet, substitute seitan or tofu or whatever, without varying the spices, without adding beans or some other kind of protein, without varying from the typical American diet, you're going to hate it. I promise you that. And you'll also probably end up undernourished.

One nice thing about vegetarian diets -- you get to eat a LOT more for the calories you use up, because most fruits and veggies are not calorie dense.

There is a much wider variety of tastes for non-vegetarian foods. Also, Chinese vegetarian food really sucks as it is full of preservative-laden mock meats.

Even a cave man can do it .

because they don't know any different. Most Americans were brought up eating meat and potatoes, no veggies to speak of. This causes arguments between me and my husband and my mother all the time. Most "mothers" overcook vegetables so that they are a slimy grey mess, with no nutrition to speak of. It is really what we grew up with.

They were raised that way.The vegetarbles they had growing up had no flavor, they were just steamed. They think vegetarians eat nothing but salad.

Here are some interesting stats:
America's favorite vegetable is a starch: the potato
America's second favorite vegetable is water: iceberg lettuce
Americ'as third favorite vegetable is a fruit: tomato
America's fourth favorite vegetable is a condiment: onion
America's fifth favorite vegetable is actually a worthwhile vegetable: carrot
America's sixth favorite vegetable is water: celery
America's seventh favorite vegetable is a starch: corn
America's eighth favorite vegetable is actually a worthwhile vegetable: broccoli

Because their tastebuds have been trained since birth to taste animal fat instead of vegetable fat. You see way more kids loading up on mac 'n cheese, chocolate milk and fried chicken nuggets instead of fresh produce and bottled water these days, right? Plus, fattening food usually equals comfort because of all the good memories built around it at family gatherings and holidays and stuff.

Comfort is good, fat tastes good, habit is comfortable so they want non-vegetarian meals.

i perfer vegetarian food
i guess the other guys just don't like to try different food

Which people? North Americans?

Because we were raised on post WWII instant foods and foods-of-the-future -- essentially, non-foods.

Growing up in N. America, fresh food of any kind was rarely seen beyond the soggy salad drenched in croutons, bacon-bits, dressing, grated cheese, ... or the odd banana or apple etc.

So, of course eating some simple stir fry with rice is not going to register on our taste buds very well. We're programmed to respond to heaps of sugar, salt, msg, fake flavours, ... a bite of a soggy carrot from the bottom of the fridge is not going to exactly entice anyone to eat vegetables.

You'd have to ask them, but I'm guessing that familiarity, high-sugar, and high-fat come into play.
