Is glycerin an animal product?!

Question:

Is glycerin an animal product?

What is glycerin made from? I hear it isn't vegetarian. I had no idea, and I have been using it in homemade cosmetics. Is it made from animals? What animal/part of the animal is it made from?
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question.

Answers:
glycerin is not made from hooves, that poster was thinking of geletin. glycerin is derrived from fat. usually animal fat but it can be made from vegetable fat. if a product has glycerin in it it will almost always be made from animal fat, unless it specifically says it doesn't.

Yes, it's from horses. Boiled hooves, I'm afraid.

Some are made from animal products, but if its marked vegetable glycerine, its fine. I use it all of the time and make homemade cosmetics too. Your question isnt dumb at all-I was clueless until I researched it

Actually gelatin is made from animal hooves, Glycerin is a by-product of soap manufacturing and soap was traditionally made from animal fat and lye (sodium hydroxide)

YES the commen kind that is found in MOST products is from Animals but there are animal friendly alternatives.
here is what I found on peta:
Glycerin. Glycerol.
A byproduct of soap manufacture (normally uses animal fat). In cosmetics, foods, mouthwashes, chewing gum, toothpastes, soaps, ointments, medicines, lubricants, transmission and brake fluid, and plastics. Derivatives: glycerides, glyceryls, glycreth-26, and polyglycerol. Alternatives: vegetable glycerin? byproduct of vegetable oil soap?nd derivatives of seaweed and petroleum.

I heard it is usually made from cartilage area by the bones. some people think it's made from boiled horse hoafs but I doubt that! We can get away from it entirely cause dish soap contains glycerin that's what makes the dishes shiny.
Also it's in most shampoos too! If the animal is already dead and wasn't killed for the purpose does it matter? So yes glycerin is an animal product! It only matters if someone deliberately kills animals for the purpose. It's usually the old animals that are near death that get killed for the glycerin!
We can't stop washing our dishes and stop washing our hair because of glycerin being in the products, can we?
I never found a glycerin free shampoo or glycerin free dish detergent. Even liquid laundry detergent contains glycerin that's why some think it cleans better than the dry powder that doesn't have glycerin in it!
