I can certainly relate to your daughter. I was an animal-loving 8 when I made the connection between "meat" and "animals." Much to my parents' dismay, I refused to eat meat (I actually got sick thinking about eating meat - I couldn't disassociate) from that point on. My father, who grew up on a farm and hunted as a child, has never figured out how he could possibly be genetically related to me. :-)

I'm now 43, and still a vegetarian.

Recipes are plentiful on the internet and in the book stores. My one caution to you would be to carefully monitor her diet to ensure that it is balanced and contains adequate vitamin B sources and protein. If she is simply eating the side dishes with the rest of the family, she is probably not getting enough protein in her diet.

so she doesnt eat chicken or fish at all? cos if she does she's not really a vegetarian.
just google vegetarian dishes.

Gee, I wonder where a 5 year old would develop such strong ideas, whatever their specific content may be.

Good Lord I feel sorry for her. Barely out of diapers and already psychologically doomed.

Most Mexican dishes are simple. Try quesadillas, enchiladas, or even simple beans and rice.

Pasta, pizza and lasagna are good choices as well.

If she'll eat eggs, you can make her a breakfast burrito with eggs, veggies, and cheese, and some salsa if she likes.

There are excellent recipies on http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/recipes/... and http://www.vegetariantimes.com/...

Good luck!

HEY TELL YOUR GIRL TO ROCK ON CUZ I CAN'T STAND EATING MEAT. UMMMMMMM TRY http://vegkitchen.com/kid-friendly-recip... CUZ THE HAVE GREAT RECIPES. TRUST ME I'M 12

Well if she doesn't like hings being killed, tell her to feel sorry for plants too. Plants are living too, but does anyone care? I can see you named her Genesis, from the bible. Well in Genesis, God clearly stated that he places everything, including animals on this earth for us to use, eat, etc. I recommend feeding her real meat and telling her that it was soy. Then after a year or so, switch to real soy and she would HATE it. trust me, it works like a charm! =)

There is a great cookbook out there. World Vegetarian by Madhur Jaffery. I first found it in my local library. After copying about 1/3 of it, I finally bought my own copy. She has many great recipes, and many of them she has fed to her own grandchildren, so they must appeal to a child's palate.

Mexican quesadillas are easy and pastas. In the summer I love different combinations of veggies and potatoes. I'm all about simple.

And to *Sean Durkman*: Genesis is a wonderful name for a compassionate child because:

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food: and to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the heavens, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, [I have given] every green herb for food: and it was so.
*** Genesis 1:29-30 ***

That is so sweet! You've got a little spitfire on your hands! And with a good conscience, too. Thank you for supporting this choice she's made.

who put this silly idea into her head, meat contains vitamins we need for daily living vitamin b 12 for healthy growth, can get a supplement, look up vegetarian diets on the web

there are many good Vegetarian cookbooks in most libraries and bookstores. I'm sure You can find one You like there or order mine from my website: www.dollardaysplus.biz The Veggy Corner

Stick to mixing legumes and grains for protein, then add sauces (tomato) for flavor. And congrats Mom for raising a consciensious, independant lil lady! You should be proud.

I have a veggie baby, too. Morning Star Farms makes all sorts of yummy non-meat things and even Target supermarkets carry it in their freezers. We like their veggie hotdogs, fake bacon, "chicken" nuggets, and their "prime" veggie burgers, just about everything they make is good.

A great store to try is Whole Foods: do a store locator search here http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/i...

Trader Joes has all sorts of yummy vegetarian foods, so look and see if there is one near you:

There are more ready to eat AND frozen goodies at most health food stores, so take Miss Genesis with you and go look around. You'll have loads of variety to choose from and you can ask employees for help. She's more likely to eat it if she's helped pick it out.

We really love Amy's organic, too. They have canned stuff like pasketti-o's that rock! All the EnviroKids brand of cereals, like Gorilla Crunch, and their cereal bars are quite good. The EnviroKids cereals have 3 ingredients! No lie and they taste great.

Best of luck to you, believe me when I say that she'll do better if you let her pick it out. I almost forgot! Pasta with veggie marinara is vegetarian and it's easy to prepare, mama.

Take care.
