The covering that is removed from a ear of corn?

my grand father used the covering from the ears of corn to protect patato in 1910. i want to know what the covering of corn that is shucked away is called. i need to explain this to children.

I think it may go by different names in different regions, but we call it a husk. When I was a kid, we made corn-husk dolls as a craft activity.

The husk is the outter layer.
The silk is the stringy stuff closest to the corn.

It's called a corn "husk".

Well, I used to shuck corn when I was a kid and we called it the corn shucks or corn husks.
