Will Lacto-Ovo vegetarians consume fish eggs (caviar)?!

Question:

Will Lacto-Ovo vegetarians consume fish eggs (caviar)?

I have been a Lacto Ovo vegetarian for about a year, and this is something that I have pondered. Not like I am about to run out and buy caviar. Can't afford it. Just more of a hypothetical-type question.

It is a nice mix of the first two answers.

A vegetarian does not consume animals (including fish) or slaughter byproducts (result of animal death).

Because the fish dies to get fish eggs, the eggs would therefore be classified under "slaughter byproduct" even if the egg was unfertilized like chicken eggs are unfertilized.

Because fish eggs are actually fertilized, they are therefore baby fish and therefore animals. If you are a person who believes life does not begin until after birth... well, then you can stick with the slaughter byproduct rule of thumb.

While being a vegetarian, it is often better to ask yourself "should I eat this?" instead of "can I eat this?".

well, you have to consider that unlike chicken eggs, caviar harvesting actually kills the fish. If you are vegetarian for animal concerns, then likely you would not eat caviar. My theory is there are no rules-if I chose to eat something, I dont need the permission of a group, just based on their beliefs. I will eat whats right for me. I realize the veggie police are not going to turn up, if I eat something others dont. I think its just a matter of personal choice

In my opinion, it's like eating a fish fetus. Would I eat a dead fish? No. Would you? Well, that depends on your personal beliefs. I eat chicken eggs because they're unfertilized; a chicken fetus was never an issue. It all really just boils down to your personal food ethics.

I am a lacto-ovo vegitarian my self.
When I was doing soem reseach on Lacto -ovo vegitarians I siad nothing to the fact that you cant eat caviar. It just siad you don not eat meat or fish but you can eat eggs and dairy. So I assume you are safe to eat them. But from my personal point of veiw I would not eat them.

That would make you a pecto-lacto-vegetarian, which is okay if it's okay with you.
