Ideas for vegetarian speech topic?!

Question:

Ideas for vegetarian speech topic?

I want to do a persuasive topic on why people should eat less meat for speech class. What are some good points to make? What do you believe in and why about being vegetarian?

Would appreciate your thoughts :)

Great topic!!

Definitely mention some of the health benefits. Many people are under the misconception that vegetarians are reedy and undernourished. Not true if you eat a balanced diet!

Some facts:

Vegetarians have a much lower incidence of colon cancer and lower incidences of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and lower cholesterol. It is suspected that they have longer lifespans but this hasn't been conclusively proven.

also:

"The American Dietetic Association, the largest organization of nutrition professionals, states on its website 'Vegetarian diets offer a number of nutritional benefits, including lower levels of saturated fat, cholesterol, and animal protein as well as higher levels of carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, potassium, folate, and antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and phytochemicals.'"

If you're not already, why not become a vegetarian yourself for a few days/weeks and then include in your speech how you feel?

Comparing health benefits and risks of above average amounts of soy in the diet.
Some people might hold back on soy out of concern, but what are the benefits?
I am not a vegetarian (I am an omnivore), but do enjoy vegetarian foods.

I would work the animal cruelty angle and show pictures of slaughterhouses and describe the brutal way that most animals that are consumed in America are slaughtered....now if that's not persuasive nothing will be!

Hi,

If you could cover ways to supplement the iron your losing by not eating meat. When I was a vegetarian, I nearly had to be hospitalized for anemia. I know there are ways to supplement it now, didn't know then.

i would present it in three ways:
1) get a list of health risks that are avoided by not eating meat (for example, veggies have a lower risk of obesity), together with pictures of what can happen to your body if you do eat meat (clogged arties, heart surgery, obese people, etc)
2) find information about how raising animals for meat destroys the environment (too much land and water is used for raising animals, etc)
3) talk about the animal cruelty side of eating meat- find plenty of pictures and construct a timeline of what happens to the animal from the minute it is born until it is beaten to death and put through the grinders in the factory.
good luck!
you could also talk about common misconceptions people have of vegetarians and vegans, and hand out delicious vegetarian/vegan recipes.

Hi there. Not eating beef is the single most effective way to stop global warming. Cows generate more harmful waste than all cars combined. We are a fat nation and vegetarianism can lead to less heart attacks, less strokes, and less obesity which also is a major factor for diabetes, hypertension, gall bladder disease.http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~eh300401/info... this article can help. Good luck on your speech.

You can get all the ideas you need for the speech by reading or watching a diet for a new america by John robins.
