If you eat meat, does that mean you are a bad person?!

Question:

If you eat meat, does that mean you are a bad person?

The cashier at McDonalds who rang up my bacon, egg and cheese biscuit this morning was wearing a PETA 'No Fur' button on her shirt. I asked her about it because I don't wear fur coats and I was just curious. She said "They are not for people who eat meat...pause...people who care."

I was shocked as all get out when she said that. I thought to myself, does it mean I don't care because I eat meat? Was that right for her to say that?

I am just curious as to what the general opinion is on this matter. Is it true that if you eat meat that you don't care? Does it make you a bad person?

Thanks for understand everyone. I was really worried after what that lady said to me. I started to think about switching to a vegan diet because I am a good person. It really bothered me to have her say that. I don't think I am going to go back to that McDonalds. I couldn't even enjoy my bacon, egg and cheese biscuit after what she said.

That was rude of her to say....I do think that the girl need to check her button at the door when she shows up to work serving all us uncaring people our sausage biscuits, hamburgers, chicken nuggets and other MEAT products. I mean if eating it makes us bad...wouldn't serving it make her the devil in disguise?

No of course not - that is what animals are bred for!! These vegetarians bang on about not eating meat yet they still wear leather shoes etc

oh, fox, you never give up do you. For those who dont know, foxhunter guy is obsessed with veganism, but doesnt have the gumption to do it. Read his other ridiculous questions-the guy is a loon

That's just a personal opinion. an opinion is and opinion not the truth!
Also there are many different definitions of a bad person.

No, it doesn't make you a bad person. Eating meat (and wearing their skins) is something we humans have done for a long time, and it's only recently that we've made sure that when we do kill them we do it in a humane manner.

The problem now is that we don't eat foxes, or any of the other animals used for fur. Perhaps if we did it wouldn't have such a stigma...

no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

an animal wouldnt think twice about eating a human so its like wise really

even fish and chicken is meat but white.

definitely not a bad person, and that cashier at MC Donald's was being very rude and hypocritical to talk to you like that, you can enjoy meat without worrying about your stance in society, vegetarianism is a personal choice not to be forced on people. Many scientists argue that not eating meat deprives your body of some of the natural ingredients it sorely needs to fully motivate and repair itself, put this persons opinion out of your mind, and you eat what you want without any care, as a personal choice is a good choice, don't let this person worry you again as she really shouldn't have forced her beliefs on you in that manor!

Eating meat does not make you a bad person.

Remember, if the roles were reversed and that cow could eat you....it would. Of course it would be so lovely if they could go after those PETA people first!

i would have a talk to her boss

Well the fact that she was working in McDonalds means she can't care that much. Surely selling meat to many people is much worse than 1 person eating meat?!

We are meant to eat meat. Some animals are, some aren't. We are just lucky that we are at the top of the food chain.
Just because a Lion mauls, kills & eats it's prey doesn't mean it's a bad lion. It is just nature & the circle of life.

If anything, people should be careful about where their meat comes from - if the conditions were humane in which the animal lived before & in the way it was killed then there is nothing wrong with it.
It is just as nature intended humans to be.

not true.....just another extremist trying to make you feel bad about living.....ignore them

Reminds me of when I was at the porn shop buying condoms and the cashier informed me that nonoxinol-9 contributed to the risk of cervical cancer. I wanted to beat this broad, what nerve.. don't sell the things then. We are animals just like any other animals, just at the top of the food chain. Be proud of that and accept that we are SUPPOSED to eat meat. if you don't, be prepared to take vitamins your whole life because there are alot of mineral deficiencies associated with lack of sufficient meat consumption.

It's terribly un professional (yes I know we're only talking about Mac D's but that isn't the point) for her to be wearing that badge and speaking to customers like that( especially in a place where 90%0 of the products sold contain meat.) If she is so concrened how does she jusitfy her job? PETA is not just for vegetarians, fur and meat come from different industries and the animals are treated differently. I have to say that alothough I wouldn't buy real fur I do wear leather shoes and eat meat. I'm not going to change that for anyone's opinion!

Eating meat neither makes you a good nor a bad person, that depends on a whole lot of other considerations ,those with strong convictions on matters of food & animal rights ,slaughter etc, should be faithful to these comvictions, but they certainly cannot impose it on others, those who do not think on these lines have no cause to feel guilty.

of course no the god makes animals for this reason

She sounds like a jumped up little madam to me. I'm sorry, but no self-respecting vegetarian would work in McDonald's, a company that singlehandedly tore down acres upon acres of precious rainforest in order to farm cattle for bigmacs.
PETA is not an exclusively vegetarian organisation as far as I am aware. Like to RSPCA in the UK, they promote animal welfare, in that they (and I) believe animals bred for consumption should be bred reared and slaughtered in a humane, thoughtful and caring manner and allows the animals to behave naturally, live well and be protected from disease and stress.
If you care about animals and also eat meat, the best way to approach this is to think about where the meat has come from. Have the animals been pumped full of steroids to make them grow faster? Were they kept in sub-standard conditions in order to keep costs down? Most of the time, cheap meat comes from unhealthy animals. You'll find that by sourcing animal welfare approved sources of meat and paying a little extra your food will taste better; not just because it was a happy healthy beast, but because you are being responsible and making a difference.

if eating meat makes you a bad person, then i must be a very very bad one coz i love my meat. no i don't think so.

The moral inconsistencies in your stories are getting worse. First of all, I don't know any vegan, vegetarian or PETA supporters who would work in McDonalds. McDonalds, as I'm sure you are aware is the symbol of everything which Vegans are against. Mass exploitation of people, animals and landscape. It is simply making profit from the poor and un-educated masses who believe that somehow "filling up" on a McDonalds is going to make them feel better.

The other thing is that what she said doesn't actually match up to my experience of people who don't eat meat. I've never said to any of my meat eating friends "You obviously are an uncaring person because you eat meat" and I've never met another vegan who does.

It is obvious to me that this, like all the other scenarios you've posted in recent weeks, is entirely made up.

If you are trying to make a point, try to at least make your premis believeable. If you are going to make a phylosophical argument you must make it on the basis of true morality - no one who believed meat eating was wrong and made you a bad person would ever serve at McDonalds.

Eating meat does not make you a bad person, but killing for sport does - if you are indeed a fox hunter, you are a slave to the bloodlust of the neanderthals and that makes you less than the person you've evolved to be.

If you consider the rate at which vegetarian animals multiply (even humans), imagine what would happen to the earth if nobody ate them!

Face it what she said was true. You were asking about about a button for an organization for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. So realistically speaking, those who don't eat meat don't care about that issue. I see nothing wrong about her comment, and don't see it as anything to get upset about. SHE didn't say you were a bad person, you are the one bringing that comment out.

Your second question of was it right for her to say that? No, it wasn't, and as a matter of fact it was hypocritical of her since she is working for an organization which really doean't care for the ethical treatment of animals.

Oh, goody, today's installment on the colorful, fictitious life of Foxhunter_guy!

Before you get deceived, read this guy's questions, here's the link:

Foxhunter, please report me to Yahoo Answers, I am trying to get delisted from this service.

I'd report myself for ratting on you, but I can't.

Hiya, She was wrong to express her opinion whilst in work, she could have just said it's against the fur trade. ....And Yes i am against the fur trade, it's horrible when you see a beautiful animal skin on an ugly woman. But no we are not bad people because we eat meat, it's our choice and we have the right to choose. Just as people choose to be vegetarian, my daughter is vegetarian but she would never try to put her beliefs on us. So don't let this woman pull the guilt trip on you, she has no right to do this.

No, it does not make you a bad person.
The MacDonalds employee should think twice about why she is working there if she is wearing this button. She has obviously sold out in one form or another by working in a meat oriented restaurant.

If she was a member of PETA, then what the hell was she doing working at McDonald's?! Also, I have to say that although I support PETA's aims, I think that woman went about everything the wrong way. First of all, she should have POLITELY explained to you the reason why she was wearing that button. Also, I don't think that eating meat makes you a bad person. I'm a vegetarian animal rights supporter, but I used to eat meat, and I also have a lot of friends and relatives who eat meat and who are good people. Don't let the words and actions of a few self-righteous jerks like that woman make you think that all vegetarian animal rights supporters are like that.

Not caring does not make you a bad person right away, just a "not caring". Your choice!
Apart from that, employees at McDonald's don't wear PETA buttons and don't give answers like that, because in both cases they loose their job.
But at least your conscience is stirring. Is it? Go ahead and do whatever you want, eat bacon, become a vegan, whatever!
Don't waste your time on Yahoo answers, go and write cheap novels, you have a talent for that. Or write stories for these cheap magazines called "My true story" you could make a fortune with that. :P

i was at mcdonalds 5 years ago, i ordered combo with diet coke, the cashier says diet coke is not good for you, i was shocked as all hell, so i ask, why not, and she says it's got sweenters or whatever that's not good for me (her words not mine) you know what? best advice i ever got up till then, i was verythankful someone would tell me things like that.

it was right for her to say that, if you care, you would have seen the meet your meat video by peta, and the cashier gets paid $5 an hour, she don't care about you, she wants you to order, pay and leave, so she can help the next customer.

Why do you recycle questions?

From another point of view. Quite often, when buying food, I ask if the product is vegetarian and I get a nasty remark such as, "You should eat meat. You can't be healthy otherwise." I've been vegetarian for 24 years and I'm still alive.
