Are all nuts as nutritious as each other?!


Question:

Are all nuts as nutritious as each other?

I'm trying to go vegetarian, substituting nuts for meat in my food. Can I get similar amounts of protein from (eg) peanuts, almonds, walnuts and sunflower seeds? I'm a student, so sometimes I can't afford the types of nuts the recipes suggest. I do still eat fish sometimes, so it's probably not the end of the world if the difference is only slight...

If protein is what you are looking for, here is hopefully, everything you could want to know about it and how easy it is to get in a vegetarian diet.

Nuts do vary, some have 1-2 grams, while others have 12.

But you don't have do have nuts as your only meat *substitute.* I almost never them myself.

The key to a balanced diet (vegetarian or meat-eating) is variety. Too many meat-eaters assume they are *healthy* and have a *balanced diet* because they eat meat... SO not true. Meat is no miracle food, and it provides next to nothing you can't get elsewhere. Many of the things we thought meat to provide is provided in equal or greater amounts by beans and veggies... protein, iron, the whole shebang.

Go buy some nutritional yeast and some fortified cereal for your B12.

I suggest getting yourself some tofu. It is not all that expensive, goes a long way, makes great Chinese dishes and has more protein and iron than beef.

Because you are working on making the switch, may I also suggest fake meats... these help create a more comfortable transition.

nope.. some have more fat ..macademia nuts are fatty...pistachios are not a good choice because their flavour is hard to mask
cashews are a good veg choice they make nut butter

They are generally the same.... except the wing nut...that has too much iron.....

They are not the same. But all are rich in oil. Walnuts have the good type of oil. To a lesser degree peanuts are too as well as sunflower seeds. Almonds are rich in calcium as well as sesame. Most of them are rich in magnesium.

er pretty much, but don't get stuck eating just one type of nuts, mix it up a bit, if you can't afford to eat nuts, get baked soybeans, it's $2 a lb, pure protein
