Any vegetarians who have been to Greece?!

Question:

Any vegetarians who have been to Greece?

I'm going there in a couple of weeks, and I'm a vegetarian. Is it going to be difficult for me to find dishes without meat or fish? Is Greece "vegeterian-friendly"?

Answers:
I recently went to the Greek side of Cyprus with the same concerns.
They have loads of veggie foods and some of the specialities like vegetable moussaka are fantastic.

Don't worry, there are loads of Greek dishes that contain only vegetables, most restaurants have at least two or three vegetarian dishes on their menus. if you are going to a large resort, you will find a better variety though. There are some really tasty dishes, you'll have loads to choose from.

These are my favourites:

Gemista - stuffed tomatoes and peppers
Saganaki - fried cheese
Kolokithokeftedes - pumpkin balls

Have a great holiday

The most things I've eaten in Greece are pure meat stuff. Chips and kebabs is the most eaten product there, it's basically meatclumps badly roasted on a large metal stick (a saté, but with bigger chunks of meat then you can possibly swallow) and french fries.

You are going there at the right time of year as it is lent and the Greeks fast quite a lot coming up to Easter - fasting to the Greeks generally means not eating meat but eating a lot of vegetables and beans. The Greek food has some wonderful meat dishes but also some great vegetarian ones such as Fasolia (a thick soup/stew of butterbeans, carrots and celery) and Spanokopita (spinach pie). You will get greek salad, chips and bread everywhere. Be careful of some dishes that may not contain meat, but may be made using chicken stock. They cook wonderful potatoes that have been roasted with meat so you need to explain carefully that you dont want these.

If you are going to a tourist resort you are much more likely to get special vegetarian food but dont miss out the traditional greek food. Oh, be careful if ordering stuffed vine leaves or peppers - many of these have mince mixed through the rice.

Have a lovely time !

Hi, I found only two vegetarian restaurants in Greece, listed on VegDining.com, but I'm sure that you can find vegetarian options in the other restaurants, and there's always fresh green salad!

Good luck, and enjoy your trip!

Hi I was in Greece for 2 months working and the Greeks have amazing food for veggies. Greek salad and falafel in pitta bread were my faves but stuffed tomatoes and peppers were also great yum yum!

You should be fine. Vegetables are in every country.

I've been many times and have always found plenty of vegetarian food. Look out for 'briam' which is a sort of vegetable stew with aubergines, gigantes(butter beans in a tomato sauce), spanokopita (feta and spinach pie), saganaki (fried cheese - sounds odd but it's lovely, but rich). There will also be vegetarian moussaka and loads of salad choices including the traditional Greek salad which is usually big enough to be a main course. Stuffed vine leaves, felafel and little cheese pastries are delicious as snacks along with olives and hummus. In the touristy areas you will also find pasta dishes. Most places I went to were happy to cook something especially for me if I couldn't find anything on the menu that I liked. Don't be afraid to ask as they would rather have your custom.

Greece is a country packed with plenty of fruits, veggies, pasta's, rice, legumes and don't forget some of the best olive oil in the world.......you are going to love it.
