What's a good substitute for ground beef in a recipe?
I'm making a meal for someone who doesn't eat red meat. The recipe(s) call for ground beef. What is a good substitute I could use?

I only asked that it wasn't red meat (the USDA categorizes pork as red meat, so that's out), but the chicken & turkey may possibly work.
I put it in the vegetarian section, b/c I know often times vegans/vegetarians are pros in substituting in recipes calling for meat! And ppl who eat no red meat are sometimes called "pesco/pollo vegetarians."

My step dad does not eat red meat, so we use ground turkey. And to be honest, when you season it, the turkey holds the flavor better than beef. I really like Jenny O brand Lean Ground Turkey.
TVP
or
the MorningStar crumbles.
The crumbles are easy to work with and come in a green package (bag) that can be found in the frozen food aisle (Wal-Mart). TVP can be found in most grocery stores or your health food store.
(This is in the vegetarian category people!!!)
ground turkey
Ground chicken
is turkey red meat? you can get like louis rich ground turkey in packs or rolls
Ground turkey
ground turkey
Ground turkey works just as well and tastes good too.
ground turkey or ground chicken. pretty much any other ground meat will work. it's very hard to tell the difference, texturally at least, between ground turkey and ground beef. my family used to try to avoid eating beef as part of a new diet thing or something, so we replaced it with turkey. it actually made everything taste better.
Veggie ground beef.

I am a vegan, so I use SMART meat [meatless] ground beef.
It tastes great and works well too =]
Boca makes a delicious frozen meat substitute.
My kids do not know when I sub it in spaghetti.
Good Luck.
shredded pork.
edit: figures the people who tell her another meat to replace ground beef get 5 bad ratings. Her question was a replacement that was not red meat not something that was vegetarian.
chicken, pork, turkey depending what recipe you are using it in.
i have used ground turkey for 23 yrs.
Chopped chickpeas
When I was a vegetarian I replaced beef with tofu in my dishes and it worked fine.
mashed up black beans, crumbled tofu or tempeh
Boca crumbles or morningstar farms recipe crumbles.
By the way..there is no such thing as a pesce or pollo vegetarian. It makes no sense. Vegetarians do not eat fish or chicken so they cant possibly be any sort of vegetarian.
TVP is texturized vegetable protien, and yes, its from soy. I substitute french green or black lentils, or other beans, as well as portabello mushroom, which holds up well. You will need to reduce the cooking time a bit. Lots of green pepper and onion will enhance the flavor. Pescatarian means they will eat fish and seafood, but no meat or poultry.
