chait, dairy does harm cows. They are housed in unsanitary conditions (so often end up with udder infections--which is why most dairy products have a good % of pus in them), kept perpetually pregnant (the only time they give milk is during pregnancy and just after), have their babies taken from them almost instantly (where the male calves are used for veal), and end up in a few short years as cheap beef products.

Others have already pointed out what you need to know...do not eat any products that come from animal exploitation or death, which includes any dairy derivative (whey, casein, lactose, etc), eggs, meat of any animal (fish, beef, seafood, chicken, etc), honey, etc. I'd suggest a few sites to check out:

Why do you want to become a vegan if you don't even know what it is. You want to be cool or something?

Basically eat vegetables, rice, wheat etc. I'm a vegetarian but consume milk, cheese etc...because it doesn't come from harming cows. So I'm not a vegan...but pretty close to vegetarian.
Try some of the sources I have listed below
For protien, you could always try beans, peanuts etc...
There's also Soy and vegan burgers that you can get from the stores...they are pretty decent.

By consuming dark green vegetables or dried beans a vegan can maintain good iron levels in their blood. Black eyed peas, prune juice, raisins, watermelon, and figs also contain lots of iron. Seaweed is an excellent source of vitamin B12 as long as its been processed correctly.

stop eating dairy, eggs, and other animal products. I actually found it kind of hard to turn vegan, maybe this will sound kind of gay, but what i did was write a list of all the animal products (well stuff that was made of animal products. like ice cream and cheese and chocolate) i consumed, and got them off my diet one by one then crossed them out. this will sound very gay again, but it felt good when i crossed them out.

edit: oh yeah, and you'll be eating loads of soy and needing B12 supplements, there are B12 pills in most health stores and they're quite easy to find.

You should eat vegies but not meat

Here's what I did. Go to peta.com and order the Vegetarian Starter Kit (it's free). It gives you great ideas on how to make the transition to vegetarianism / veganism, besides many reasons to become one. It also has some recipes and shows you some brands that sell cruelty free products. Good Luck!
