I bought some new veggies today, how should I make them???
Today I bought two new veggies which I have never used before:
Rutabaga
Parsnips
Please tell me how to prepare each (the rutabaga looks like it has a wax coating on it?!?!?) in terms of cleaning, peeling, etc.
What is the best way to cook/eat these veggies? I also have a bag of carrots, a few turnips, shallots, garlic, bell peppers.
Answers:
It does sound uncreative, but -- peel your waxy purple Canadian root, chop it into chunks, and boil it and mash it. It's good served with mashed potatoes and plenty of butter.
Parsnips invariably make me think of stew or soup. Google "winter vegetable soup" for ideas.
You need to peel the rutabaga, as well as the parsnips.
Sounds like you have all the stuff for a stew.
First answer sounds good to me! You can use the rutabaga exactly like you'd use a turnip! The parsnip works much like a carrot.
I often eat both of them raw as a salad. Marinate matchsticks of them in your favorite dressing and enjoy.
Both are also really good roasted!
boil them

heres a soup recipe involving parsnips, you can substitute the turnip for the rutabaga.
