What is the meaning of E12, E117, etc. found in ingredients of food?!

Question:

What is the meaning of E12, E117, etc. found in ingredients of food?

Answers:
The E numbers are a method used by European food companies to shorten their ingredient list. I can't find a listing of the numbers you use as examples but the 1xx numbers usually refer to food colorants and I know of no 2 digit numbers (like e12).

As an example of why they use those E-numbers. Here in the US an ingredient panel might list:
Aluminium sodium sulphate, Aluminium potassium sulphate, Aluminium ammonium sulphate

But the European panel would simply list:
E521, E522, E523

Saves space doesn't it, it also makes the label look less scary!

The link below lists names the ingredients with their number.

E numbers are codes for food additives and are usually found on food labels throughout the European Union. For more information on what the different E numbers represent you can visit this site. http://www.yourtruhealth.com/main/inform...
