Do You know why is it so detrimental?
My question is about the purity of vegetarian food. I am concerned about people who need medicine and they might take something that contains animal products, like some things that are made from shellfish are very good for people who are sick in a certain way. I'm thinking of things where such a small amount of animal material is involved.
Answers:
Vegetarianism is a matter of food choice and not eating an animal product which involves hurt to the animal. It doesn't mean that the person doesn't eat any animal product at any time. Earlier gelatine capsules which are used in medicine were not marked as animal products but now it has been made mandatory. So the patient and the doctor have a choice of using tablets instead of capsules or using capsules made of some other sustance not of animal origin.
In emergency, it is allowed for vegetarians to consume medicine which is of animal origin, without incurring sin (if you are worried about that).
Ayurveda and homeopathy also use animal products in their medicines.
Your question was wrongly labelled and may send some wrong messages that vegetarianism is detrimental.

I am born and brought up as a vegetarian
I'm really not sure what you are asking here......being vegetarian is a choice......anyone who needs a medicine that they won't take because it has some animal byproduct....well.....what can I say.....guess it's part of being able to make our own choices....
I did have that problem.
I went through the hospital and had many things put through me
But after words I was so sad about what animals had to suffer for my medicine, that I went vegan
well I had other reasons for veganism too, butthats niot the point
