Is there any vege juice that's poisonous?
Recently I bought a juicer and drink fresh squeezed juice every morning. Every morning I extract juices from potato, carrot, apple, celery, yam, beet, ginger, lemon, pumpkin, garlic, etc and drink at an empty stomach.
I heard that the raw potato and yam juice is poisonous.
Does anyone know if its true? Or if there is any particular raw vege juice that may be poisonous if eaten raw.
Answers:
Murray lists the one truly bad item. The list of foods that are toxic when raw is fairly short! You aren't likely to juice them (or eat them freshly raw) but kidney beans and soya beans have toxins that are destroyed by heat.
As to raw potato or yam...Only if those roots had been stored improperly. Exposure to light can cause them to generate poisons but if stored in a cool, dark place they are no problem at all! Any potato or yam that starts to turn green or sprout shouldn't be eaten raw and the green should be totally removed before cooking. In any event, poisoning yourself with them is *almost* impossible! A few folks have managed to do it but the toxins are very bitter, so unless you have problems with your taste buds, you wouldn't be able to eat enough to cause a problem.
Edit:
Oops! Missed one on your list. Always remove any green from your garlic and if the center plant-let starts to develop remove that also! Once again, almost impossible to harm yourself, but it can cause an upset stomach.
I can't imagine any thing you have described as being poisonous, but do not try RHUBARB leaves, or even raw.
If that doesn't kill you it will leave you very very sick and in hospital
No, but I wouldn't juice poison ivy if I were you...
