Question:

Are there any cheese's with out animal products in them? or manyo's?

Answers:
If you're in the UK a company called Redwood makes some vegan 'cheese' that rates very highly. In the US the best seem to come from Vegan Gourmet.

Mayo replacement is much easier. Both Nasoya and Vegenaise are widely available!

You can also make your own replacements!! Soft tofu just needs a dash of lemon juice and some sweetener to replace mayo. There are dozens of recipes for vegan cheese but they take a little more work. The homemade ones tend to be better than the commercial products but have no shelf life (so you make small batches as needed for whatever you're making).

Look for Soya based products. They have a complete line of cheeses and mayonaise.

Remember to check the ingredient list of the cheese if you're not sure. Look out for rennet or enzymes. Many packaged cheeses and other foods contain Vitamin A Palmitate, which is made from fish gelatin. Also, check for whey, since this is a byproduct of the cheese-making process.

Refer to the list of common animal ingredients for a more comprehensive list of things to avoid. If you have additional information or corrections to the above list, send email to

go to a health food store. around here we have Whole Foods and Earth Fare (huge health super stores) and they have several options for the items you are looking for.

Cheese is milk based.............so no there aren't.

I've heard of soy cheese and tofu.

Vegan cheese and mayo exist, but they are imitation as the real products contain dairy and/or egg. Some of my non-vegan veggie friends use the real thing since no animal died producing it (like meat). They get it from certified cruelty-free sources.

There are certainly soy cheese and soy mayo available just about everywhere, just like soy milk, soy chocolate, soy cream cheese and soy icecream. There is also a vairety of immitation meat (flesh) products availalbe, immitation egg whites, immitation egg yokes, and animal free artificially created flavours resembling every genuine animal product available.

The things you want to be looking out for are things I haven't (or rarely) seen in shopping centres before. These could include soy whipping (or pre-whipped) cream for making cakes, vegan wine (where egg white hasn't been used as a natural filter), and any of the aforementioned products that are simultaneously vegan and organic.

Good luck.

If you have an Indian grocery store in your area you might be able to get vegetarian mayo and tartar sauce too! They don't contain egg or any animal products.
