"Vegetarian eggs." Huh? When did this marketing BS show up?!

Question:

"Vegetarian eggs." Huh? When did this marketing BS show up?

In this thread --

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

-- there're a number of answers about "vegetarian eggs," stating the "fact" that "vegetarian eggs" are from chickens fed a vegetarian diet.

WTF?

I see

http://www.egginnovations.com/vegetarian...

did a nice sales job, but, really. What are people thinking? That other eggs are non-vegetarian? That those ones are somehow "more vegetarian"?

If you fell for this one -- pray explain why?

Do I have to stop eating vegetables farmed with fertilisers from animal sources, now? For heavens' sakes...

NB: I've been a vegetarian since birth. I still think marketing eggs as "vegetarian" is a crock.

That means they're "eggs from vegetarian chickens," not "vegetarian eggs"...

It means that the chickens were never fed anything that derived from another animal or that the chickens came from a farm that feeds its herbivor animals plants only. Unlike most farms that feed their animals a cannibal diet regarless to whether their carnivorous or herbivors, these "vegetarian" farms feed their animals only plant products.

"other eggs are non-vegetarian?"

That is correct. Regular, mass produced eggs come from chickens that are fed a cannibal diet that often consists of other animal products. Another thing is, that these "vegetarian" or "cage free" eggs come from farms that don't treat their animals unethically. And their eggs aren't mass produced either. This is why these eggs cost like 5X more than the regular eggs.

You don't have to do anything in regards to veganism or other vegetarianism. You can eat whatever you want. No one's telling you that you have to buy these eggs. However, those who do care about animal cruelty and animal abuse, have the option to buy animal products from farms that don't treat their animals inhumanely.

And yes, vegans do look to buy vegetables from farms that don't use any animal products. You don't have to be a vegan, but at least respect their decision to be vegan and live the life they live.
