Yeah... that's not actually a vegetarian. Nice try, though. It's kind of flattering that you want to be called a vegetarian even though you make no effort whatsoever to be one.
P.S. Guy above me, vegetarians don't eat fish.
EDIT: Okay, great, you can tell your friend (politely, of course!) that she's not a vegetarian and it's kind of unfair to vegetarians that she'd call herself one even though she eats meat.
And if there's a certain type of vegetarian who eats fish, there's a certain type of Christian that worships Zeus.
And if a flexitarian is kind of a vegetarian, somebody who doesn't believe in God but does believe "thou shalt not kill" is kind of a Christian.
Sorry to bring up religion, but it's a great tool for making analogies.
EDIT 2: ...yeah. Nobody said there's no such thing as flexitarianism. We're just saying it's not a form of vegetarianism.
It is no kind of vegetarian. Vegetarian's don't eat meat. That's how it works.
lacto vegetarians don't eat meat or eggs but do eat milk products
ovo vegetarians don't eat meat or milk products but do eat eggs
lacto-ovo vegetarians don't eat meat but do eat milk products and eggs
vegans don't eat anything that has to do with animals
That's not a vegetarian.
A vegetarian eats no meat, regardless of bones or how it's cooked, rare, medium, etc. Some vegetarians do eat fish however. A Vegan eats nothing from animal protein of any kind, like eggs or even milk.
Umm believe me a flexitarian is not a vegetarian...picky meat eater hunny that's the correct term
To answer your question, your friend isn't a vegetarian at all :) Who in there right mind eats bloody meat anyway?
Edit:
Totally agreeing with PsychoCola on this one...cool name btw :)
I am so ashamed... I accidentally "thumbs upped" the person who said vegetarians eat fish.
When I read "A vegetarian eats no meat, regardless of bones or how it's cooked," it NEVER occurred to me that the next few words would imply that vegetarians eat the meat off of dead fish!!
Sorry guys, that one was me.
Vegetarian= no dead animals
SERIOUSLY "no bloody meat" just means that you cook your meat before you eat it!!!
I'm Vegan but was a Vegetarian before and as far as I remember your friend is in NOOO way a Vegetarian.
Note that the Wikipedia entry even pointed out "None of the vegetarian organizations recognize this as a category of vegetarianism..."
People can put anything they like on the web. It doesn't mean it's so
"um..yea..there is a certain type of vegetarian who eats fish!!!!!!!!"
No.
And 'flexitarian' is a, er, cute sort of term, but it's just not 'a type of vegetarianism.'
Many members of my family are (1) not vegetarian, but (2) eat little meat, and eat, and enjoy, a great deal of vegetarian food. The idea that that would require some sort of label, let alone one claiming some affiliation with vegetarianism, is risible. Even the ones who have been completely vegetarian in the past would agree.
I'm really not sure what the use of a term that has to be explained each time you use it might be. Picture yourself in a restaurant --
"I am a vegetarian" is useful.
"I am a vegan" is useful.
"I do not eat red meat" is useful.
"I am allergic to eggs" is useful.
But, "I am a flexitarian"? No. It's akin to announcing you're a "chicken-fish-tarian" or "ovo-sensitive." Who'd do that, when the language already accomodates simpler and more precise explanations? That said, "I am a vegan" is reasonably readily understood to mean "I do not eat any meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, or dairy products. I also probably avoid honey and anything else derived from an animal, etc," which is cumbersome and boring.
Cumbersome and boring, much like 'flexitarian' and the inevitable explanation...
Vegetarians don't eat meat!
yeah, you people are disgusting.
you're not even remotely vegetarian unless you don't eat any meat what so ever.
meaning, no chicken, no fish, no cow, no pig, no lamb, no animals what so ever, whatever the hell your people eat.
if you eat a little bit of meat, you're not vegetarian.
AT ALL.
I hate you people who call yourselves vegetarian yet still eat meat.
ENOUGH ALREADY.
"A vegetarian eats no meat, regardless of bones or how it's cooked, rare, medium, etc. Some vegetarians do eat fish however."
That's too funny. If no vegetarians eat meat, I have a question for fish-eating vegetarians: What plant does fish come from????
Flexitarian is not any type of vegetarian...nor is someone who eats fish. Those websites are wrong and are giving wrong information. Vegetarians do not eat anything that came from a dead animal ever. If you eat meat sometimes, you are not a vegetarian...period.
There is also no such thing as a semi vegetarian.
The website articles you mention are written by uninformed people. The About.com person has no idea what she is talking about and it is people like her that cause this nonsense.
