Why have the idiots who make Smash instant mashed potato put milk in it?!

Question:

Why have the idiots who make Smash instant mashed potato put milk in it?

I just bought a tin the other day and opened it to find it was now powdered rather than the 'chunks' it used to be. I poured the water on it and noticed it smelled funny so I had a look at the ingredients and it now has full fat milk in it. Apparently it's so you get that creamy mash taste at home. Well, why can't people just put their own milk in if that's how they want it?

I'm p!ssed off because I'm vegan, so now I can't have it, but also because there's all this talk about healthy foods and obesity and they're adding full fat milk to something.

Any non-vegans not trying to lose weight who want an unused can of Smash are welcome to get in touch!

Answers:
I bet they are the same varlets that put milk powder in Auntie Bessies roast potatoes - most of Walker's crisps and Bean feast chilli non carne. Why? Who would actually think 'What else can I put in my chilli aha I know - MILK!' You just wouldn't. I'm a vegan and the smash thing is sick. I agree with you let people put their own milk in for Pete's sake!!

blame the Smash martians-they're still laughing at us after all these years

Yea I know what you mean; lots of foods are loaded with bad fats and cheap, unhealthy oils used in/for a lot of stuff... its just that most food companies just care about money, and not people's health.

they should have to put a huge warning sticker on things when they change the ingredients like that. lactose intolerant people could suffer because of it...

mash your own. it'll taste lots better.. have you tried frozen mashed potato (haven't checked to see if it has milk in but it's nicer than smash x)

Why use it at all? Can't you peel potatoes and make your own mash just the way you like it?

Why not use real potatoes instead. Cheaper, vegan and you can make them to your own liking.

Anything non-organic that would be/could be, or is good for you health wise always gets an added ingredient to counter all the good and healthy rendering it unfruitful.

You've answered your own question, to make it more creamy, you have to look carefully at everything to ensure it is suitable for you.
I have looked at an old Smash tin which I keep instant mash potato in, that didn't have milk in it. So they probably changed it after you had started buying it.
I use Somerfieds instant mash potato, the only suspect ingredient is E304 this is usually vegetarian, and I think vegan, but could come from non-vegetarian source, however as the potatoes are labelled vegetarian, I imagine these would be suitable for you, but it comes in powder, not granules. You should find some other varieties suitable for you.
It is a shame manufacturers don't mark foods vegan as readily as they label them vegetarian.

Haven't had Smash in ages, but I agree that's really rubbish! You much better off making your own with real potatoes and soya or rice milk though.

Don't you have the strength to mash a potato? Jees! If you are soooooo concerned about healty eating what the hell are you buying 'smash' for?!?!

I know how you feel,I hate processed foods.I'll always buy something then later on I'll find out it has an animal by product like vitamin d3 or L-cystiene
