Answers:
Taurine

Taurine or 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid is an organic acid that is abundant in the tissues of many animals (metazoa), especially sea animals. Taurine is also found in plants, fungi, and some bacterial species, but at lower levels.

Taurine levels were found to be significantly lower in vegans than in a control group on a standard American diet.

Taurine is essential for cat health, as they cannot synthesize the compound. Taurine is now a requirement of the AAFCO and any dry or wet food product labeled approved by the AAFCO should have a minimum of .1% Taurine.

It's an amino acid precursor, and therefore essential to good health. There are some plant-based sources, so to answer your question, it would depend on the source of the taurine.

The Taurine in energy drinks is normally Synthetic. I know for sure that Red Bull's is.
