Vegans, why no yeast?!
Vegans, why no yeast?
I've recently become vegan (4 days ago), and am already finding it hard to determine what to eat. Why don't vegans eat yeast products, considering that yeast isn't an animal, its a fungi. If we don't consume yeast, shouldn't we not consume other fungi as well.
Please help, I'm really confused.

Okay, so if its a living, single celled organis that we shouldn't consume, what do I do for bread in a college dining hall?

I have never heard of this 'no yeast' thing. If vegans weren't allowed to eat fungi, then they couldn't eat mushrooms either. They also couldn't take many antibiotics (mold is also a fungus).
If you want to eat yeast, then eat yeast. No vegan police officer will come and arrest you. I'm guessing they probably eat it as well.
Staci & Smart Aleck - Yeast are in the Fungi Kingdom. They are NOT bacteria. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/yeast...
well, yeast even though it is a fungi is also considered a living organism, which intern prevents vegans from eating it because it is considered *like* a tiny animal, yeast is a single celled organism, so it technically is an organism which means its alive which prevents vegans from eating.
It's a live bacteria, not fungi. And it's still living so the Vegan will not eat anything that still is live.
No yeast? But yeast isn't an animal, and it has no central nervous system, and eating yeast products doesn't deplete the planet of its natural resources, nor does it keep world hunger alive like meat consumption does. Where did you read that? Yeast is fine, since it's only a one-cell organism and it doesn't suffer. Besides, it's not unhealthy either.
Eat yeast products, it's fine.
As for eating live things, raw vegetables and fruits are alive and we eat those. Yeast and produce don't feel pain and they have no feelings. They have no central nervous system. There is no brain. There are no nerves at all. Yeast is fine, whoever said it's not is wayyyy too extreme in their veganism.
Semi-vegetarian? Like being a semi-smoker or semi-pregnant? It's either or. One can be a meat eater, but a lite meat eater. Being vegetarian means one *abstains* from eating meat. Abstinence means no meat, not part-time meat. Part time is lite meat, that's all.
yeast is an active bacterial culture that eats and reproduces, so i guess that qualifies it as a living thing. you are going to have to purchase your own yeast free bread from a local health food store if you want to continue to eat bread. such is the price of becoming a vegan. you could re-consider, and go with a less strict form of vegetarianism. (no meat only but fish & chicken, eggs but no milk, milk but no eggs, no meat or chicken but fish)
the veggies and fruit that we eat are no longer attached to their root systems in the ground and cease to grow after they are harvested, so technically they are no more alive than cut flowers in a vase...
Hey I"m ok with vegans etc. but give me a break. Don't eat a living thing-- well that pretty much rules out all food-- what you going to eat, dirt, rocks? Sheesh.
Well I have been veg for 19 years and that is the first time I have ever heard that vegans don't eat yeast! I guess I can kind of see the skewed logic in it, but I'm pretty sure I don't know any yeast-avoiding vegans!
I'm going to be having a close look at the Vegan Society website to see if I can find anything about it!
Right, I've been on the website and I sure as hell can't see anything wrong with yeast. Half their recipes include yeast extract, and there are recipes ideas with bread, so I think someone is having you on!
According to whom?
Yeast is not an animal product.
Some people may chose to avoid yeast and yeasted products, as well as fermented products, but these individuals are doing so because they have or have a history of a systemic candida (yeast) infection. But you don't have to be a vegan to have that health history or to feel the need to make that choice.
Uh... I'm a vegan and I eat yeast...
The argument that yeast is a living thing doesn't make sense. Plants are living as well, and vegans eat them. If they say fruit, etc isn't alive anymore when they eat it, then they shouldnt have a problem with eating meat either...or drinking milk. Yeast is a fungus, just like mushrooms, and I know plenty of vegans that eat them. ALL edible things are living organisms, so yeast is fine to eat if you're vegan. Just don't eat bread products with eggs or milk in them.
first off,, fresh fruit is still alive (it's still growing,, ripening),, there are no rules to being vegan,, if it's for the animals,, who cares if you eat yeast,,, if it's to cleanse your body,, then,, maybe no yeast,, you decide,,
Somebody is either completely misinformed, or is pulling your leg.
Vegans do not eat animal products. Yeast is a fungus, NOT an animal, therefore it is ok to eat.
