Is KEWPIE brand Mayonese suitable for vegetarians?
Some of the ingredients in it are seasoning and starch. I need to know if either one of it uses animal fat or not. Kewpie brand mayonese is very tasty but somehow I'm just curious to know because my next door neighbour is a vegetarian and she just loves the taste of it..
Answers:
For egg eating vegos but definitely not vegans.
That's a Morinaga brand, isn't it?
I was never impressed by it, myself (too bland for my taste, and with a silicone-like slipperiness), but it still has eggs in it...all mayonnaise does.
The best mayonnaise is Hellman's, which has an excellent texture and enough lemon juice to make it piquant.
Unless it's Kewpie Soy Mayo, it contains egg.
I very much doubt that there is any animal fat in it. I've never seen a non-vegetarian mayonnaise.
I'm not familiar with that brand but it seems unlikely that the seasoning would have any kind of animal product in. If your friend is definitely vegetarian, and not vegan, then it should be fine as it's just the eggs that would make the difference.
HOWEVER, having just looked at the Kewpie website, your friend might want to think again given that, as it says on its website, Kewpie uses 8% of all the eggs produced in Japan. I can find absolutely no mention of free range or any other cruelty free statement on there, so I imagine they are making a huge contribution to the disgusting caged hen industry.
You can buy mayonnaise from organic, free-range eggs, or you can even get vegan mayonnaise these days, which I personally use and think tastes really good. It's not quite like mayo, but the consistency is pretty impressive, it's just generally very white as opposed to the yellowy colour of mayo.
