Question:

I know a 'vegatarian' that eats meat?

whats the best way to explain that vegatarians dont eat meat ( his favorate is mcdonalds milkskake complete with cow fat!!!!!!

Answers:
Just frankly tell him that you being a vegetarian are eating a food item that is non-vegetarian after clarifying(forgive me if the spelling is wrong)that whether he knows that the milkshake that he loves is non-veg.You can also advice him to become non-veg. if he is not a staunch vegetarian and it is not compulsory for him(like if it is because of his religion or so on)

I think you are confusing vegetarian with vegan...

He's obviously not a vegetarian then. I wouldnt bother trying to explain anything to him. Let him eat what he wants.

Is he vegetarian for moral reasons or because he doesn't like the taste/texture of meat? I have friends who are vegetarian, some for the first reason, some for the second.

If it's for moral reasons, then your friend may not know that the cow fat is in the milkshake. Best to inform him and let him make his own mind up from there.

I had a vegetarian friend who genuinely didn't know suede was from animal skin, she was very upset to find that out!

"Vegetarianism is the practice of not consuming meat, with or without the use of other animal derivatives, such as dairy products or eggs. Some vegetarians choose to also refrain from wearing clothing involving the death of animals, such as leather, silk and fur. Veganism, sometimes called "strict vegetarianism", excludes all animal products from diet and attire, whether or not this involves the actual death of an animal (dairy, eggs, honey, wool and down feathers)." (from Wikipedia)

When your friend consumes his milkshake, he is not eating meat, merely consuming milk. Many vegetarians eat milk and cheese.

If you have any more vegetarian/vegan dietary questions, I found a wonderful resource:

http://www.ivu.org/faq/

The International Vegetarian Union has an FAQ set up for any other food choices you might question.

Fat isn't meat,he could still call himself a vegetarian ,he's just not a vegan.

there are loads of unknown animal products in food, a famous one is marachino cherries have beetles in them.
Unless you cook everything from scratch, and know what ingredients go into it, it would be near impossible to have a strict vegetarian diet.
Live and let live, so what if he enjoys milkshake, although as a vegetarian i wonder should he even enter McDonald's,,but that's another question altogether

Milkshakes are made with milk. Milk is not meat.

Hi there, the best way to explain to your friend about not eating meat is say to him/her "YOUR GOING TO DEDICATE YOUR LIFE TO NOT EAT ANYTHING THAT SCREAMS OR MAKES A SOUND, OR JUST SAY NO MEAT NO WAY"

A vegetarian does not eat anything which requires the animal to be dead first. This means no meat of any kind, no gelatin, no lard / animal derived fats other than milk fat, none of certain colourings and flavourings that are dead-animal derived. Your friend can say that he doesn't eat meat, but it would be misleading to call himself vegetarian.

Does he actually realise what is in what he is eating?
Does he know chewy sweets are made with calf insides? Does he know animal fat is used as a thickener in sauces and icecream etc? Does he know which colourings are vegetarian and which aren't?

If not, tell him! He might be horrified to find out. If he wants to be regarded by others as vegetarian he shouldn't be eating non-vegetarian foods.

If he knows what's in these things and still eats them he is not vegetarian, just someone who doesn't eat cuts of meat.

so, he isn't a vegetarian, no matter what he believes, incidentally, it's vegEtarian

Well if he eats meat then he is not a vegatarian
vegatarians can eat dairy products but vegans don't eat any animal product ie meat or dairy

I'm not sure about this, but I don't believe their is any meat or meat byproducts (cow fat) in milkshakes. Milk, I would assume so, but that is not, not vegetarian.

Why are you posting this again? I posted a reply to the exact same thing, though in it you mentioned that he ate boil in the bag beef. Stop wasting our time.

And PLEASE if you're going to continue posting in this section, learn to spell VEGETARIAN. If necessary, copy it from the title of the section.

milk is not meat---------the milk may come from a cow that will probably become someones dinner, but milk is not meat.

he's not a vegitarian. or at least a loyal one.

you've already asked this, only earlier in the day you also said he eats beef. Is this the same, or a different friend ?

Avegetarian does not eat meat, fish, poultry or slaughter by-products.

Its still the same as my last answer as the definition hasn't changed for 110 years.

Tell him vegetarians think he's an annoying wannabee.

Barbara B is wrong. Its not "near impossible " to be a vegetarian. Vegetarians do check the ingredients, and do know where thier food comes from.

Without checking ingredients you cannot call yourself a veggie. Maybe you can say you don't eat things that look like meat, but you cannot say you are a veggie.

a vegetarian doesn't eat meat, but if he is either an ovo-lacto or lacto vegetarian, he could still consume dairy.

p.s. i've found that a lot of people that claim to be vegetarians eat meat.

McDonalds milkshakes used to contain chicken fat, but I recently checked and now they are veggie. So he's allowed to drink milkshake.

Now if he is Vegan, then he shouldn't drink the shake (as vegans do not eat dairy products).

Ask him why does he want to be a vegetarian? Is it because its fashionable? Where are his morals on this subject? Usually vegetarians either dislike the taste of meat, or are true animal lovers disgusted by the thought of killing and eating them. Let him make his decision.......macdonalds or a good soya alternative!!!!

hes having you on isnt he ?

some vegetarians don't know the meaning of the word!!
