Are the bagged/frozen veggies as nutritious as fresh veggies?
I'm going to try and start eating veggies with every meal, but I don't have time to run to the grocery every other day to get fresh veggies. Are the bags of frozen broccoli and whatnot as good for you as the fresh?
Answers:
Actually yes. In fact, some believe they're even better. They're bagged and frozen at the height of their freshness whereas the fresh produce gets gassed on its way to supermarkets and by the time you buy it, it has lost some of its nutrients. A good rule of thumb is to buy fresh or frozen but avoid canned. Canned is convenient but missing a lot of important nutrients.
Edited to add: I'm assuming you're buying just regular frozen veggies. Be careful of some of those new things where they've added cheese or other things to the frozen veggies. Many times those are loaded with preservatives and trans fat. If you're just buying regular old broccoli then you're good.
Roughly. Check the nutrition label to see what is really in there.
depends on the shelf value.
if it is fresh frozen like most of the stuff by birdseye or green giant.. something like that should be. as long as it isn't anything added it should be the same..
Most frozen veggies are as good as fresh. They are fresh when they freeze then. Avoid ones that contain sauces, and say precooked. I applaud you on you decision to eat your veggies!
Yes. The only difference is that inherent fructose etc change to a carbohydrate form. Especially in corn. If you eat corn directly off the plant, compared to corn allowed to sit for 12hrs, you are barely eating the same plant. Freezing does the same thing. However, the remainder of the nutritional benefits are still there.
If you can't get fresh vegetables regularly, buying the frozen ones is a good alternative.
Sometimes frozen vegetables are more nutritious than so-called "fresh" vegetables. The "manufacturers" harvest, prepare and freeze the vegetables very quickly. Don't get frozen vegetables if they have added salt - read the label.
Fresh vegetables can deteriorate in the delivery time to the supermarket and the time spend on the supermarket shelf.
If you have local farmers markets or farm stores they are good places to shop for fresh vegetables but sometimes they close over winter.
Yes they are just as good for you because they are harvested and processed when they are ripe. Unlike many fresh vegetable which are picked just before they begin to ripen and are allowed to ripen "off the vine." If you are looking for frozen brocolli, I would suggest the Birds Eye Frozen Brocolli Baby Florettes. My family loves brocolli and I buy this brand which is very good. It is all florettes and not mostly chunks of stem like other brands. I tried the Green Giant and was greatly disappointed; mostly stems!
Basically, if they fresh and uncooked when frozen, they're fine.
bagged frozen veggies have lost the nutrients that fresh veggies have so bagged frozen veggies are not very good for you they do taste good but the fresh veggies are better for you.
Frozen are close to fresh, but the nutritional value is not the same as fresh. It's definitely easier to fix meals with frozen veggies than fresh, so you may end up eating more veggies, which is always good for you.
Yes they are...as long as it's only veggies in the bag...the seasoned ones are usually high in sodium.
Yes - they are frozen fresh.
I believe that frozen is as close as you can get to fresh, nutrition-wise. Just be careful not to overcook it. Steam it quickly or microwave it. Don't boil it in a bunch of water. You want it cooked crisp-tender (basically hot & crunchy), not soggy.
