Most commonly, the cause of flatulence is from undigested carbohydrates. Given that you are most likely a Vegan (thats where you've posted your question), the underlying cause would be a lack of Vitamin B12.
For the immediate effect, Charcoal is the answer, as stated above.
For the long term handling you will need to look at bacteria in the body. The main vitamin missed by vegans is B12 - this is the one that can only be obtained naturally from shellfish (bi-valves to be exact) and nowhere else - and should be supplemented.
Should you wish to supplement via the health food store, get a soluble one and let it dissolve against the inside of your cheek. It best absorbed into the bloodstream this way as the liver will filter it out should you swallow it. The liver will store vitamin B12 and not permit the deficiency to be overcome.
You dont need to take it constantly, just enough to handle the situation. Take more when the symptoms - flatulence, memory loss, fatigue (caused by the amino acids not being metabolised), shortness of breath.
Don't worry too much as the liver will store several years worth of B12 and all the symptoms will not show up at once. Also, check your Folate intake - both Folate and B12 are co-dependent.
Good health.
P.S. If you have been avoiding fatty foods because you put on weight easily or feel fat, then this would be an indicator that you are lacking B12. It is key in making enzymes which break down fats.
Most of the time, "breaking wind" is caused by bacteria fermenting in your body. As the gases are released from this bacteria, they gather in your body and are released through...well, I'm sure you get the idea.
Go to a natural health food place and get charcoal tablets.
I've heard that burnt toast can help too.
Brussel sprouts, cabbage & similar veges cause wind....
might be a good idea to ease up on the brussel sprout water...
Im with me on this one............
Hi.
Mostly agree with the other posters but would like to take a teeny weeny correction.
B12 is not only obtained from shellfish, but plenty of other sources. There is a great link attached from the vegan forums where B12 is discussed at length.
Only thing I have to add, is to don't over-eat at mealtime, maybe do the 5 small meals a day thing, help your digestion by sitting up straight, chewing food properly, not guzzling drinks when eating your meals etc. Drinking lots of water is often key to sorting out minor wind problems.
Smelly wind indicates an upset of the flora in your gut. Overcooked greens like cabbage can cause this problem. Of course, if you're being super healthy, your body may be going through a detox.
You sound like you take care of yourself, but maybe keeping a food diary will help you resolve this.
yea I think being a vegg makes me make more gas, and more smelly gas, and I eat alot of spicy food which also helpin in making smelly gas, I'm proud of it, I collect my farts and use it to generate power for my house
Yeah, I have an idea. It's because you are eating nothing but vegetables, and grains. Have you ever been around a horse when it farts? Basically, your farts smell the same as a horse's.
