I will take a set of tabs to explain:
E-------------------|
B-------------------|
G---------------2---|
D-------4-----0-----|
A-----2-------------|
E---0-----3---------|
Ok. As you look at the tab, you can see that the first tab is on string E, and it says '0'. This means that you strum an open E (or just the E string without covering your finger over any fret). The next tab is fret 2 on string A. This means you put your finger on the 2nd fret of string A, and strum the string. The 3rd tab is the a '4' on string D. This means you put your finger on the 4th fret on string D, and strum. You can tell which order it goes in as the tabs descend right. If there are 2 tabs above each other, you strum them at the same time.
