What is a good Vegan cheese?!

Question:

What is a good Vegan cheese?

I'm a vegetarian working towards vegan. I have tried a vegan cheese or two and wasn't convinced enough to switch. Are there some good cheeses out there for various preparations? Like one for sandwiches, one for melting? Or is there one that will do it all? Taste is the biggest thing though.... thanks!

Vegan Food Fight on-line grocery has a killer Parmesan substitute.
Other than that the best of the worst are made by Follow Your Heart. The FYH are only acceptable when quickly heated to meltiness IMO.

My normal practice is to use the recipes for 'cheezy sauces' found in the cookbook "The new Farm Vegetarian Cookbook". Mixed with tofu (as in the book) you can even get a decent 'grilled cheeze' if you're dedicated enough to fiddle with their recipe.

Soft cheese is *really* hard to do! Look at the chemistry of cheese and you discover that it is very similar to plastic. The vegetable protein closest to Casein in structure is Latex! Do you want to eat latex? The butterfat in cheese can easily be replaced with E.V. Coconut oil but since it's gotten an undeserved bad name makers avoid it and use oils that aren't as suitable. The flavors and colors of cheese are easily replaced also. That said, without a suitable lattice matrix to suspend the fat globules the substitutes are still going to tend towards oily grossness.

Is there a vegan cheese? Why not just eat cheese. You aren't killing anything by making it. You aren't taking anything away by producing it.

You should really try shredded soy cheese. Never try soy cheese plain, it tastes really gross make sure its cooked or warmed up and melted. Once it is it really tastes awesome!!

I have to say that as yet I haven't found a good one. I've tried Cheezly and it sucks! I think it's mainly the consistency that is the problem. Every vegan cheese looks and feels like it's made of plastic, like those horrible cheese slices. I don't think there's anything out there doing a decent impression of cheddar, or Edam, or my favourite halloumi.
Clearly the answerer earlier on has no understanding of the term vegan, if they think you can eat cheese and have no feelings of responsibility about animal cruelty.

I think that Follow Your Heart makes the best vegan cheese. I have tried the mozzarella and the cheddar cheese. They taste pretty great and they melt. when we make pizzas we use the mozzarella and the cheddar and they both melt very well. Like real cheese.
