Does margarine spoil?!

Question:

Does margarine spoil?

Answers:
If left out too long or at elevated temperatures, it may go rancid.

However, if you keep it covered and at room temperature you should be fine... same with butter. If you don't use it that often, you should store it in the fridge to extend it's shelf life.

Bacteria need air, moisture and a nice medium to grow. Store bought butters and margarines are pasteurized (eliminates existing bacteria in the product) and have a low moisture content. Also, there's enough salt (drying effect on bacteria) in it to minimize bacteria growth. You do have to watch out for molds if you leave butter or margarine out for weeks at a time.
