Question to vegetarians?

Besides fruits and vegetables, what do you consume?And, If you eat Tofu, is it really as nasty as people say?

grains
lacto-ovo vegetarian will also eat eggs, cheese, milk (dairy)

there are a lot of great vegetarian dishes out there
(I don't think that people are meant to be vegetarian much less vegan but I know that most "westerners" eat far too much meat)

I'll eat pretty much anything as long as it doesn't have meat in it(snack foods, pasta, toast, etc), and tofu doesnt even taste like anything, it absorbs the taste of whatever you mix it with.

Tofu isnt "nasty" if you prepare it the right way. If you dont want to try tofu right away try the boca products and meal starters. however if you do want to try tofu go here. http://www.fatfree.com/recipes/tofu/...

First of all, tofu is not nasty! It can taste very good if it is cooked the right way. I'm not a vegetarian but my mother is, so I eat a lot of healty food. Other than fruits and veggies you can eat beans, grains, and all sorts of neat things. If you go to a bookstore and look under vegetarian you'll find a lot of neat books with information and recipes. Tofu is very good and very good for you.. at store they also have vegitarian burgers, buffalo wings, etc baisically everything.. i've tried it all and checked the ingreditans.. 100% vegitarian and very good to... im glad im chose to be vegitarian

No, there is some great meat replacement products are your store that tastevery close to the real thing, just without the hormones, steriods and stuff in real meat. I have given up meat products simply because I don't trust the FDA inspecting it and now they're talking about cloned meat. Forget it, I'm done. There's a reason Japan and Korea won't allow America's meat products to imported there and it's banned. Anyway, there are excellent replacements that you will enjoy and feel great about eating, not to mention lose weight. I still eat fish, so I'm not a vegitarian, but it's called a Pescatarian or some odd thing like that.

I love Tofu, it takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with, it has a spongy consistency if it is fried, not alot of flavor, just cook it with any vegetables

I eat tons of nuts and eggs (sorry, but I'm not vegan). Tofu is absolutely digusting plain, but if you put it in something such as vegan brownies, its delicious. There are tons of "normal" foods I eat that are vegetarian- pasta, salad, pizza, sandwiches, most soups, bagels, donuts, etc.

Eggs. Dairy -- way too much cheese. A fair bit of pasta. Some beans. Breads. Nothing that unusual, unless you count 'ethnic' food.

I don't eat tofu, or any 'meat substitutes' -- nasty, yes, for me. I've never tasted meat, and the texture of that stuff repels me in the same way meat does. The taste, like others have pointed out, is pretty much nothing. But the texture's just bizarre.

No I eat it all the time so to me it is really good.

Here is some information on vegatarianism just in case you wanted to know about different types of vegatarianism.


Vegetarians, as a whole, do not eat red meat. Some also choose to exclude poultry (pollo-veg) and/or seafood (pesco-veg). Because chicken and fish are indeed meat, it's debatable whether most would call it vegetarianism, but they are accepted forms.

Many veg's, in additon to actual flesh, eliminate non-meat animal products like gelatin and caesin. It varies a lot, though.

Drop all meat, but eat eggs and dairy, you're "lacto-ovo-vegetarian"
Drop all dairy products, and eat eggs, you're "ovo-vegetarian"
Drop eggs in all forms, but consume dairy, you're "lacto-vegetarian"

No eggs OR dairy, plus, no non-meat animal products, including honey, and you're, by definition, "vegan".

To go even further, and eat only plants and plant products (nothing grown with bacteria), and you're "macrobiotic" *please note, some macrobiotics DO eat meat. There's more to the philosophy than being non-meat-eaters. So, it's not technically a form of vegetarianism*

So, to answer your question, there are, in fact, 8 forms af vegetarianism. (macro's don't count) pollo, pesco, pollo-pesco, ovo, lacto, lacto-ovo, vegan, and raw. I'm just a vegan.

Tofu is not nasty at all, you just have to marinate it the right way. My favorite way to make it is to marinate it in a sweet peanut sauce and then saute it in a skillet. Yum.

As for other foods, there is a lot available to vegetarians and vegans these days. I like Gardenburgers Black Bean Chipolte Vegan Burgers on a piece of flatbread with mustard, soy cheese, and a little hot sauce to kick it up. I also eat Smart Dogs which are a soy hot dog. They taste just like the real thing. Also brown rice is a standard ingredient in a vegetarian or vegan diet and is used in MANY of my favorite recipes. Tofurkey's Deli Slice products are also tasty and don't taste like their nasty name would imply at all. They make a gread sandwich. Also, there is soy ice creams and sorbets as well as vegan cookies and cake mixes at most health food stores so you aren't giving up your sweet tooth.

I stick to the soy products from Morningstar Farms & non-meat, non-soy products from Qorn. They are a little expensive but great if you don't like to cook from scratch..

Well, anything that does not require the death of an animal.

I am a vegetarian and first of all tofu can only be nasty if you make it nasty or buy it nasty. and if ur not a vegetarian you can try tofu I promise it will not kill you. and also you can eat beans with no meat fats and rice there are plenty of things without meat that aren't fruits and veggies. Bread, eggs if your a oval vegetarian, peanut butter, nutella, pasta. Plenty!

Tofu is only nasty if you don't do it right. I thought I hated it, cuz I'd tried twice to do stuff with it and it never turned out (and I'm a great cook). Then I realized I was using the wrong kind of tofu. If you use a baked tofu or nigari style tofu, it has a lot more texture than silken tofu does (no matter HOW "firm" the silken is!). Silken tofu is better for desserts and stuff.

As a vegetarian, you can basically eat anything that doesn't have meat or animal fat, etc. in it. A lot of things you already eat ARE actually vegetarian, and many others can easily become so. For instance, mac n cheese is vegetarian, pizza can be if you order it without meat (or use veggie pepperoni, etc). Most deli's have delicious veggie sandwiches. Taco's can be vegetarian if you use vegetarian beans (which I used before going veggie anyway since lard is just NASTY!) and either no meat, or vegetarian taco crumbles (Yves has a brand that tastes GREAT... I have meat-eating friends who cant' tell the difference!). With the meat substitutes on the market today, we can make just about anything we want and just substitute fake meat (or tofu) for real meat.

Tofu takes on the taste of whatever it is cooked with, so it's not nasty. I suppose if you sat down with a big chunk of it and ate it like that it would be, but when cooked with other things (omelette, pasta, etc.) then it tastes fine.

I love Wheat Thins--they're my favorite snack. There are mock meats, but I don't eat these often because they are high in sodium. I love bread, so I eat it almost everyday. I LOVE peanuts. I eat a ton of stuff, I can't even name it all. Umm....well, I love pasta. I love soup. I love food in general, though. Cereal with soymilk, rice milk, or almond milk (I use soymilk). There's a ton of stuff. Vegan forms of muffins, cake, cookies, pancakes, crepes, pudding, and everything else you thought could never be vegan....

There's so much I can't say it all, and I can't think of it all.

Actually, because we are always searching for new recipes, we actually often have more variety in our diet than meat-eaters do. I know I eat a much better variety of foods than I used to--and they're healthier as well.

I eat soy products, whole wheat pasta, rice, beans, nuts and all the different things you can make with these ingredients. It's quite easy.

I also eat non-animal rennet cheese, yogurt and eggs.
