I asked this in the Vegetarian and vegan section.

Thanks to the genuine answerers!!

I dont drink stout as it has fish byproducts in it and I have to watch wines thanks Catsmeatuk. I don't think some people know about isinglass.

Baileys - good one Marguerita , thanks I did like it !! It's like 1000 cals a glass or something though and it is the type of drink that makes you think 'that was yummy, I will just have another, and another........'

As always, everyone thinks everything's okay for vegans until they look a little deeper into the manufacturing process. Your best (and actually tastiest) bet is to buy Co-op own brand beers and wines. They are labled properly and not only say if they are suitable for vegetarians and vegans but actually tell you how they were clarified (eg. Filtration). Their Strong Ale is very tasty and is vegan. Their Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, which was on offer a couple of weeks ago, is also a knock out and is vegan. Take a look, you'll be surprised what you find in there, and their food is all properly labled too. If it says vegetarian, it's usually not vegan, but if it says vegetarian and vegan then it is, simple but effective labling, what I've been looking for for a long time!.

I don't think so

I have never heard of a non-vegan alcoholic beverage. None of them that I know of use animal byproducts, unless you count the yeast. In that case you're screwed, because it's needed for all alcohol.

EDIT: Good call margarita. No more Baileys for you!

Yup...all of them. There is no meat in booze.

I relaly don't think any of them are made from meat or meat byproducts with perhaps the exceptions of any creme liquers. Most are made from grains and hops and other plants.

Go here - it's the Vegan Society's website - hope it helps. Happy New Year to you too! x

Aside from ****-a-Leekie Ale, which is made using a chicken, there are no alcoholic beverages that are made with animal parts.

That censor function is funny. For the bleeped out part of my ale name, think of a male chicken.

As far as I know all alcoholic beverages are made with plants. Wouldn't that be vegan? I don't believe any animals are used to make alcohol. Not unless you consider yeast and I think that is a mold, not an animal. However, if you are going vegan why bother drinking? Cows don't consume alcoholic beverages.

Isinglass, which is a substance used to "clear" wine, is made from the swim bladders of fish, so it can be argued that wine is not vegan. You could of course start making your own wine!

People often seem to guess at answers when they don't really know what they are talking about. Strange...ah well!
As this is something I know about, other than saying it's definitely a good idea to check out the Vegan Society's webside as already suggested, lots of booze is NOT vegan. One type to watch out for, for example, is wine. Often the stuff they use as a clearing agent/filter at some point in the production of wine is derived from animals - e.g. "isinglass" from the air-bladders of sturgeon, gelatine and even egg shells! Many brands advise what is used on the label - the Co-op supermarket certainly have a lot of vegan-friendly wine, and they are able to produce a complete list of which wines are vegan. Most beers and spirits are vegan. Happy New Year - enjoy your vegan 2007!

Stay away from the Jello-shooters!

stella, all other beers contain gelatine

All alcohol except jello shots, some types of beer and eggnog are vegan. Oh and anything with SoBe.

Pabst Blue Ribbon is a good vegan beer. Be careful though, if you drink Pabst and eat tofu, it is a recipe for some raunchy flatulence.

Cider - thats the proper stuff not this strongbow thing, is generally a good bet.
It's the clarification process that normally makes wine, beers ect non-vegetarian/non-vegan.
I would recommend Westons organic cider (surpirising easy to find), but any cloudy srummpy clearly has not been clarified (sorry for the pun) so that should be good as well as cheap and a knock out.
Happy new year and good luck with the vegan thing.

It's a bit late for new years celebrations but there are some on this website

good luck!

this will give you more than enough info on booze to consume:

you can get 'The animal free shopper' from the vegan society, it lists vegan alcoholic drinks aswell as lots of other vegan food/drink etc. I'm vegan and buy my wine from the co op as they have a large range and it's clearly labelled. Budweiser is also listed as vegan.
