Are vegetarians allowed to swat insects?!

Question:

Are vegetarians allowed to swat insects?

I have a friend who is a strict vegetarian who splats flys, spiders and wasps and most creepy crawlies. Surely that's wrong.

There are no "laws" regarding vegetarianism. To each their own. Anything that is eating me or spreading disease to me gets a date with Mr. Squisher. Others are caught and released.

*oink8 I don't see any problen with it. *oink* especially scince i'm allergic to wasps

Being vegetarian is a personal decision and a personal code of eating. There isn't a veggie police force that controls what vegetarians are allowed to do. Vegetarians can do what ever they want to, including eating meat...... although they wouldn't be vegetarian anymore, we don't like take them out and beat them if they have a steak craving.

Why not? They eat them.

Unless you grow your own wheat, soybeans and all... There are insects ground into the flour, and everything else. It is an allowable standard set by the government, but you're eating them anyways.

Depends on what the reasons are for being vegetarian. If it's for diet then it doesn't matter. But if it's animal rights then you shouldn't because after all, insects are animals too, so should be included in that category.

Everyone should kill germ infested, disease spreading bugs!

You are mixing vegetarianism with Buddism.

As soon as I became a vegetarian I had all kinds of carnivores judging me, telling me how to eat, telling me how they couldn't leave the love of their lives - dead animal flesh. It became rather tiresome. Lo and behold your question is somewhat similar to those the carnivores posed who were trying to find the flaw in my logic. Why? Was it to prove their choice of a carnivore's diet as right, and mine wrong? I never passed judgements on their diets!
To answer the question, it is based on choice, and I choose to "exterminate" mosquitos "with extreme predjudice", since they carry Malaria and Dengue Fever. Occasionally I swat flies, but rarely spiders. I prefer to capture them and put them out the window. Enjoy your meal.

To me, its wrong, but its up to them.

The definition of the word vegetarian does not include any lifestyle morals - its just about diet.

Accidental killing, such as roadkill, is regretable but unavoidable....by the nature of it being an accident it cannot be foreseen nor avoided.

Many meateaters criticise veggies for this, however to me its just a distraction because they cannot justify thier position so they fight the veggie morals with extreme arguements - a sure sign that the meateaters have no valid arguement.

Lump it in with "god said eat meat", "we've got canine teeth", " i don't actually kill it so its ok" and "where would all the animals go"

meateters need to be honest with themselves. they are responsible for death, pain and cruelty. Once they admit that, we can start to have a sensible debate.

nick C ( above ) : if you are going to call veggies hypocrites nad our beliefs BS at least have the decency to learn what being a Vegetarian means first before launching into such tripe.

Definitions

A vegetarian is someone living on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with or without the use of dairy products and eggs (preferably free-range).

A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, or slaughter by-products such as gelatine or animal fats.

There is no "Vegetarian Rulebook" floating around.
Vegetarians can do whatever they please. And no two are going to act the same in every situation. If your friend wants to swat bugs, thats his deal.

Veggie is a food thing. If your freind eats the bugs then that would be different. Wasps & flies I detest but spiders I just put outside & let them live cos they eat the flies. Hate eariwigs & cockroaches URGH!!!!!! Your mate has ythe right idea basically

vegetarianism is not like a religion there is no set of rules besides most insects are pests. and people are vegetarians for different reasons. some it is for the animals others it is for their personal health and others it is for the environment if you want to know more about vegan or vegetarianism you can visit www.peta.com

People become vegetarians for many different reasons. I do it for purely ethical reasons, and I do not swat bugs--I just ignore them or trap them and move them outside. I would consider myself to be on the more extreme end of vegetarians, though. You shouldn't judge your friend for swatting bugs. He/she is doing so much good already by being a vegetarian. Nobody is perfect.

Obviously one person cannot answer on behalf of all the vegetarians. Personally, if there is something gross crawling on me my first instinct is to smash it (especially mosquitoes). But on the other hand, lady bugs always get into my house in the fall and I always try to capture them and take them outside (even though I know they'll probably die anyway from the cold).
I have vast gardens and I know the spiders, bees and ladybugs are my allies.

I think vegans are against it.

I try not to kill anything if I can help it. The only insects I attack intentionally are mosquitos. I have no problem with splatting their guts all over before they can attack me.
