Question about rice hoarding?!
Hi, I need some help settling a discussion with a friend!. I swear that I heard about Asian families buying 60-lb bags of rice (or 6 10-lb bags etc!.) back when places like Costco and Sam's Club started to ration rice!. There were a lot of media reports about it and it sounded like people were making a run on rice by hoarding/stocking up a lot!.
My friend says it's not uncommon for an Asian family to buy 60 lbs of rice at once!. How long does this much rice last a family of 4 or 5 people!? I can't picture anyone eating 60 lbs of rice in a month so it sounds like stockpiling to me!. Any insight would be helpful :) Thanks!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Rice!. It's what all Asians eat!. Their whole diet is based on rice!. Other ethnic groups generally eat pasta, bread, oatmeal etc!. but Asians eat rice a lot!. Some eat it for all three meals of the day!. Without rice, I think the Asian culture would consider themselves to be at a loss with themselves!.
Yes, you do see a lot of Asians stocking up on rice because a lot of food prices are rising nowadays!. Depending how many meals rice is eaten, a family of 4 or 5 people can go through one bag of rice in a month!.
It's not uncommon to see Asian people going to the supermarket and buying an amount of sale items which can last through the rest of their lives or supply a whole army!. I'm not saying it's a stereotype, but not many go and buy expensive toilet paper when you can stock up while it's on sale!. Would you rather pay 15 dollars for a bag of rice that you have to buy to feed your family or would you prefer to stock up on 10 dollar bags of rice which can last a while and provide savings!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

absolutely they stockpiled!. but rice doesn't really go bad so buying it when its cheap is a great idea!.
i read an article the other day that said farmers in central and south america are pulling up their coca crops (used to make cocaine, but has been a part of farming life there for centuries) to plant rice!. they are doing this because even the price of grains are going up so high that they can make more money growing rice!.

It's a staple!.
So it's not hoarding, it's being eaten!.

5 people x 2lbs a day!?
That's less then 1/2 lb each person per day!.
I think they eat it for lunch and supper!.

A 50 POUND BAG OF RICE IS PROBABLY NOT ENOUGH TO FEED A FAMILY OF , MORE LIKE 60 LBS!. IT DEPENDS ON HOW MANY ADULTS THERE ARE!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
