What is a pot luck dinner?!

"Pot Luck" refers to a traditional American dinner where each guest brings a different dish!.!.!.!.!.!.
Usually each person or couple is designated a dish, sometimes you pull your "dish" out of a hat, so, for example 3 different people bring the same dish, like a lasagna!.!.!.!.!.some one will bring the salad, someone will bring the main, a couple people will bring side dishes and perhaps one will bring a garlic bread loaf!.!.!.!.!.and then there's dessert: this is where I come in!!! I try and bring something light, like Molten Lava Double Chocolate Cakes!.!.!.!.!.!.like I said, LIGHT!.!.!.!. ;)

It is an American notion!. I don't know if it's done in other places as well, maybe by a different name!. What it is, everybody who's invited to the dinner brings one item of food to the dinner!. It's "luck" what the final menu is, depending on what everyone brings!.

A potluck dinner is where all who attend each bring a dish of food!. This way there is a variety of food!. When my family has one the host makes the main dish, usually hotdogs/hambergers (in the summer,like a BBQ) and others bring things like potato salad, salad, coleslaw etc!.!. Hope this helps!. It is a dinner that everyone who is invited donates to!. For example on the invitation it might say if your lastname begins with A-E bring salad, F-K main meal and the rest of the people desert!.
