Best before/use by dates!?!
i was just wondering how best before dates work!. i know the difference between use by and best before but i just am curious as to how long after the best before date do things last and why do products even have best before!? why doesnt everything just have a clear cut use by date!?

I always follow my late Mums advice!.
If in doubt,throw it out!
In your situation you have the best interests of your residents at heart, so follow it and you won't go far wrong!.
There is a reason for most things in life, even if we don't always agree with them!.Good Luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

The manufacturer wants u to enjoy the crispness, aroma or texture of the food, so that explains the 'best before date'!. it's ok so long as it's not expired, but best to keep such foods air-tight or in the chiller once they are opened!.
so rule of the thumb, if it's not opened before the bb date, it's still consumable for about a week or so, just that it won't taste that great!.
peanut butter may dry out if kept too long, u could mix in a little salad oil to keep it moist!. as for your dijion mustard, it will lose it aroma if left standing too long in an open jar!. try to get the powder form and make them fresh to enjoy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

the best before date tells you that you will get the best quality before that date!. You could probably use it for another 2-3 weeks before you would need to toss it,but the quality wouldn't be the same!. I personally want the best quality I can get for my money!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
best befor date is when you are to eat the product at its best flavioure

Best before
Best before is sometimes indicated on food and drink wrappers, followed by a date, and is intended to indicate the date before which the supplier intended the food should be consumed!. The term best before is similarly used to indicate the date by which the item will have outlived its shelf life, and is intended to ensure that customers will not unwittingly purchase or eat stale food!. Sometimes the packaging process involves using pre-printed labels, making it impractical to write the best before date in a clearly visible location!. In this case, a term like best before see bottom or best before see lid might be printed on the label and the date marked in a different location as indicated!.
Best Before is usually advisatory and refers to the quality of the product, in contrast with Use By which indicates that the product is no longer safe to consume after the specified date!.
Use by
Generally, foods that have a use by date written on the packaging must not be eaten after it has expired!. This is because such foods usually go bad quickly and may be injurious to health if spoiled!. It is also important to follow storage instructions carefully for these foods (for example, product must be refrigerated)!.
Foods that have a best before date are usually safe to eat after the date has passed, although they are likely to have deteriorated either in flavor, texture, appearance or nutrition!.
Bathroom products/toiletries usually state a time in months by which, once the product is opened, they should be used!. This is often indicated by a graphic of an open tub, with the number of months written inside (e!.g!., "12M" means use the product within 12 months of opening)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Best if used before dates are freshness guarantees!. Companies print them on packaging to maintain a solid length of time before the product actually expires and when the product just isn't as good as it was before you opened the packaging!. (Items such as peanut butter stored in a cupboard unopened can last up to a year, however; the company doesn't want to be held liable for that long of a time period so they print best if dates to give the consumer a black and white time frame to report any quality problems they may have w/the product!.) Typically its best to throw away things like peanut butter and condiments within 14 days of the b!.b!. date!. If your working w/elderly is best to toss things by the date on the packing because bateria can grow inside the containers and cause illness!. Nothing w/a best if used by date over six months should ever be consumed!. (Unless your in college!.!. lol)Www@FoodAQ@Com
