Why are there designations for vegetarianism like "lacto" or "ovo"?!

Question: Why are there designations for vegetarianism like "lacto" or "ovo"!?
Why do vegetarians who eat eggs or dairy get a special designation, whereas, those who eat honey and other animal products don't!? What makes eating eggs or dairy special!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
For one thing, vegetarians from a Indian/Hindu/Buddhist/Jain background usually consider eggs to be "non-veg" but they are usually okay with dairy!.

Vegetarians from the USA, UK and Europe traditionally included both eggs and dairy in their diet!.

That might have something to do with it!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

They don't have a special term for honey because honey is not a food item people often eat on it's own!. Eggs and diary products are kind of a major ingredient in many different foods, so people like to point out that they are not yet a vegan but they do not consume diary, ovo-vegetarian!. I said this to another person who was complaining about the distinctions between different types of vegetarians and I think you need to get off your high horse!. I was once a pescetarian, then a vegetarian, then an ovo-vegatarian, and now I am a vegan!. This just doesn't happen overnight!. Don't make anyone else feel bad because they are still eating fish, or dairy, or eggs!. I am a vegan but honestly, honey is the least of my worries, so unless you are extremely strict, or eat honey like Pooh, most people who already abstain from meat, eggs, and dairy just call themselves vegans!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

As far as I know it's merely descriptive and the prefixes are used to help ensure that people aren't getting food they object to eating!. I never really used those prefixes when I was vegetarian unless the specifics of my diet were the topic of conversation!. Why is there no prefix denoting the eating of honey!? Who knows!. Like all words, these ones were coined by someone!. If no one has seen fit to coin a honey prefix there must not be much demand for it (I have never known any non-vegan vegetarians who eschew honey, but there must be some!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have just learnt that I am an ovo-vegetarian ( I didn't know the phrase)which I think is an important distinction as I don't want to be mistaken for a vegetarian who consumes honey or dairy products because I think the dairy industry is as disgusting as the meat industry and If I'm eating at another person's house it's a necessary piece of informationWww@FoodAQ@Com

I am trilingual and in Portuguese, ovo means egg!. :)
Lacto means milky or sticky and most dairy products come from milk!. :)
I'm not sure what honey is but try looking it up on Google!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't know, I guess it's because Honey is a sweet not a protein food like dairy or eggs!.

22yo ovo-honey-vegetarian :-)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because it makes me feel more speshul!.

I can't think of any other animal products than honey, and even that one is debatable!. Hmmm!.!.!. maybe Jell-Otarian, someone that won't eat meat, but eats animal derived gelatin!. I don't know!. I wouldn't mind just changing it to vegan and just vegetarian (no prefixes)!. No one outside of the veg*n community even really uses those prefixes anyway!.

"I'm a ovo/lacto/mel pescetarian who occasionally has a beef tamale relapse!. " -April Mayhem

There's your answer!. That's why we don't do it!.

::edit2::
Me!.!.!. as long as those beverages weren't fined with isinglass I think you'll be OK!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think if you are Lacto or Ovo Vegetarian it automatically puts you in the honey and Jello eating category!. But in case this doesn't satisfy you, the Latin word for honey is "MEL"
FOR EXAMPLE:
If you eat eggs and honey and are otherwise a vegetarian you would be a ovo/mel vegetarian!.
also, I don't think it's fair to leave out the Pescetarian diet!.!.!.vegetarians who eat fish and seafood!.

***Actually pescetarian IS a FORM of vegetarianism***
I, obviously, am not a classical vegetarian!. (anymore) I only do it because my tummy limits my intake!. It was mainly a joke!.!.!.but from the 5 thumbs down I've already gotten on this answer!.!.!. I can see that a lot of people don't get it!. LOL But I insist on informing you!.!.!.
if you insist on "teasing"

From Wikipedia:
Pescetarianism is a dietary choice in which a person, known as a pescetarian, eats any combination of vegetables, fruit, nuts, beans and fish or invertebrate seafood, but will not eat mammals or birds!. Some animal products like eggs and dairy may or may not be part of a pescetarian diet plan!.

Terms like "pesco-vegetarianism" are sometimes used to describe pescetarianism, to emphasize that pescetarians eat vegetables, fruit, and grains as well as fish!. However, this term is controversial and less used, in part because it implies that pescetarianism is a type of vegetarianism, and some vegetarian groups do not want to be aligned with fish eaters!. The Vegetarian Society, which initiated popular use of the term vegetarian as early as 1847, does not consider pescetarianism a valid vegetarian diet!.[1] The definitions of "vegetarian" in authoritative, mainstream dictionaries vary!.
**you can see here that it is purely a choice to enclude or exclude pescetarianism as a form of vegetarianism!. I guess your choice is to exclude!. And that's your choice!. It's MY choice to include it as a vegetarian lifestyle since no other meat is included in the diet!.**

PS! You kinda of come off as a jerk since you "teasingly" bash just about everyone who gives you an answer!.

*^*^*^*^*P!.P!.S*^*^*^*^*^*
I AM wrong!. I enjoy the flesh of innocent fish mmm and the flesh of tamale!.!.!.*drools* (another joke here!.!.!.get it!?!?) And that makes me a big bad nasty carnivore!. (Oh god, I hope that's right!.!.!.it IS carnivore right!?!?!?)
But you're still a jerk!. An octo/lacto/mel jerk!. :D
I thought I had sensed a bit of sarcasm from you in your question!. You know!? I was just having a little fun and then it just turned into defending myself!. So!.!.!.yeah, sorry!. I am most certainly not any typical type of vegetarian!. (Anymore) I just thought we were having fun!.
also, I wonder why you put your answers and questions on private!? It would be interesting to see if you just post questions you already know the answers to!.!.!. just so you can slam people!. !?!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
