Why do people hate vegans?!

Question:

Why do people hate vegans?

Answers:
I think it's because people are ignorant, and they do not understand why people are vegans, and what they exactly are. I don't think they hate vegans, I just think hey choose not to try and understand it.
I'm a vegan, and people don't "hate" me, but I do get an overload of questions, and usually a heated debate. It's ridiculous, but some people don't change.

It doesn't help either that vegans are stereotyped as hippies, and animal activists, and alot of people think we'll force people into our own ideas...

Hope this answered your question.

Alot of people may be put off by vegans, because the vast majority or people don't understand them. Usually when someone doesn't understand something, that leads to fear. And generally, if you fear something, you dislike it.

But in fact, I would even go so far to say that most people don't even know what vegans are, which makes most people even more confused.

But another reason people may dislike vegans, is because vegans act like everyone else is wrong. I mean, if they're not eating anything that comes from animals because they feel that it is bad, or the animals are being exploited, or whatever, then everyone else must not only be wrong, but bad. No?

So, when I have a vegan not only telling me I shouldn't be enjoying my Whopper, but even the mayo on my sandwich should not be eaten, I'm going to be perturbed that they find it necessary to tell me what's right or wrong.

They don't.

they basically think we are crazy and try to shove our view down their throats. grr. ignorant people

Perhaps its not that people "hate" vegans, just like vegans don't "hate" folks that eat meat, right? I mean, vegetarians and vegans don't try to moralize or jam their beliefs down everyone elses' throats, right? So, perhaps its a misunderstanding based on fear and ignorance....on both sides!

A lot of people assume that vegans think they are better than other people because of their moral choices.

Once upon a time, it was vegetarians who ticked people off, but now vegetarianism is so common, vegans have taken their place ;-) Maybe in another ten years, when veganism is as widespread as vegetarianism, it will be the fruitarians who get picked on!

I think some people feel they are being 'judged' in the presence of vegans, especially meat eaters who feel guilty about eating meat (i.e. want to be vegetarian but don't quite have the full motivation). Also, because of the disgusting tabloids spreading lies and making crap up about animal 'extremism', people can feel intimidated about someone's strong views. It'd be on par with a typical straight guy, nice enough but with old-fashioned views about sexuality, feeling uncomfortable around someone who was openly speaking about gay rights. People don't like having their views, morals and way of life questioned. Which is sad. How are we supposed to advance as a society if we can't put right our wrongs?

< vegan.

Well..hate may be too strong of a word, but some people are put off by vegans because a vegan lifestyle is a strong statement to make and could be misunderstood as being a 'fringe" group, if you will.

So it may be a little bit of fear of the unknown coupled with the image of vegans as lunatic activists that can't be reasoned with.

because alot of vegans try and act better than everyone eles!

Because it is hard to understand how they can have anything to eat if it hasn't got, some form of animal in it.
It is also very hard to adjust lifestyle habits to cater for them ( I should know for the first 3&1/2years of my sons life he refused to have anything to do with meat, fish, dairy in general, eggs, and trying to get him to eat those foods became a night mare, where in the end I gave up because he refused to eat outright because it might contain one of those things (really frustationg when everyone else is quite happy to eat all those things) & got him invovled in the food preperation side of things and he started eating again It has taken nearly 5 years, but he will now have 1 egg (once a month) he will now have cheese, icecream (sort of the dairy things) but he still refuses on the meat/fish side of things. But he has no learning dificulties, very healthy active life, wieght is in the healthy range, height is in the sam range as anyone else. If anything it is difficult, because people refuse to acknowledge that my sons diet choice is his OWN choice & it hasn't been forced upon him (more likely the other way around) but once informed of the choice & what was invovled it was easy to adapt so the whole house ate together & the same foods and let him decide when he was ready to change (if he will) and that it was OK to choose to be a particular way with food.

Many people that are vegans are weirdoes and head cases, and that's the kind of people that are annoying to be around.

Being a omnivore, I can say that I have met vegans who were strange and vegans who were not. I have also met religious people who were strange and some who were not. Sometimes a combination of the two. I met a 7th day Adventist who neither tried to shove his religion down my throat nor his veggies. Since meeting him I have learned to incorporate more vegetarian ideas into my cooking. I have not incorporated any more religion into my life except maybe praying my meal will turn out good.

A lot of anti-vegites simply cannot conceive
or accept the idea of someone doing
something different from them. Also, alot
of right-wingers equate vegetarianism with
liberalism.

I believe that vegans, as well a omnivores, taste just fine when properly cooked.

It's not that they hate Vegans. But Vegans have a tendency to be quite militant about their beliefs and often deride those that eat meat. They act as if they are morally superior because of their choice, and that ticks people off.

If someone chooses to be a Vegan, that's their choice. But let me enjoy my hamburger in peace, I don't share your beliefs.

Hope that helps.
