Why is Sushi so popular? What makes it such a large pop trend?!

Question: Hi- Why is it that it is "cool" to like sushi? Thanks Everyone!

Answers: Hi- Why is it that it is "cool" to like sushi? Thanks Everyone!

I think it has gained in popularity and is trendy and cool because I think people thind there is an air of sophistication about eating something that so many other people think is "just gross" The idea of " they don't know anybetter" I think is considered- and the fact that sushi is expensive as well, I think gives people the idea that it is food of the elite- and the fact that it is healthy and easy to eat vegetarian or vegan at sushi restaurants also draws the super trendy crowd.

BUT- the stuff is awesome. I certainly never was a big fish or rice person before I tried sushi, but I LOVE it. I think it is the combination of the vineragy rice wth the crisp ingrededients.- the wasabi and ginger to add the perfect "bite"

And luckily it has spread and I can get reasonally priced sushi in my neighborhood and I eat it almost every day!!!

I don't know why people think it is "cool" I just like some of the different kinds, but not all of them. Some of them are GROSS.

I don't think it's necessarily a cool or not cool type thing. You either like sushi or you don't. I guess a lot of people are just figuring out that they like sushi, since it's becoming more popular around the country, so it seems like a trend. Anyway, I think it is completely delicious, but it's a personal opinion.

I live in Central California. Sushi is not considered "Cool" in the land of beef cattle, chicken farmers, and 20 country music stations vs. 5 rock stations.
I have food allergies - no wheat products and no dairy. I can't have hamburgers on buns, pizza, burritos on flour tortillas, and sandwiches which are the prime menu items at fast food restaurants. I can eat salads, vegetables, fruits, rice, corn, some meat products, and fish. So I like to eat selections of sushi. I don't eat it because it's "Cool", I eat it because it tastes good and I can eat something not cooked by me that doesn't involve bread, meat and cheese.
My favorite is smoked salmon, cucumber, and avocado by the way...

its partly i think because its eastern cuisine so its new for westeners and because its good for you and tastes reall nice (in my oppinion)...victoria beckham supposedly likes it too

however it can give you worms and food poisoning if your not carefull x

Maybe people find that it is something new and exotic. I live in NY, sushi is so last year. Ethiopian... now that's cool. (sarcasm...)

It's a very misunderstood cusine, but it's pretty simple actually and there's a sushi for everyone. For fish haters, or vegans, try the avocado roll or the cucumber roll. There's cooked fish (shrimp tempura) there's fake fish (imitation crab) and then there's like every other kind of fish (I'm a tuna person). So what's not cool about it? (Ethiopian food... still wayyy cooler)

1.) It's been 'cool' and part of the pop trend for 30 years.
2.) That makes it a staple, not a fad.
3.) If you tasted some you might agree.
4.) Why does food have to be incinerated to be good?

It's not a matter of being cool or not. For westerners, my theory is that Japanese culture and food, like other Asian foods, are simply exotic. Like eating spicy food, there's a sense of adventure and excitement in exploring anything, or any place, that's considered as exotic. For Taiwanese, Taiwan was colonized by the Japanese for a while, so they've adoped Japanese culture and food into their lifestyle. For mainland Chinese, some people despise it simply because the Japanese slaughtered many Chinese during the Japanese-Chinese war, so they loathe anything related to Japan. For Vietnamese, as the most conservative Asians I know, they mistakenly associate sushi with raw fish, so they are not open to accept it into their diet. I heard that the Japanese in Japan don't even eat it that much, only for special occasions. And I, for one, used to hate it, too, until my husband introduced me to California Rolls and cooked fish (like eel) and shrimp. Then his sister got me to try one bite of Sashimi (which is the correct term for the raw fish kind without the rice) on one occasion, with my eyes closed and not told what type of food I was trying, and I have liked it since. Eating sushi and sashimi is about the sensual taste and feel of the fish, melting on your tongue. I just don't eat it that much because I cannot afford it.

I do not like all sushi, but I love california row.

Sushi is not a trend it been around for a long time. Not all Sushi contans fish. If you don't like it the it fine. I like Sushi and I am not cool at all.

It's not just sushi, look at green tea, Toyota, import models, Iron Chef! Everything asian is getting more popular in this country. Before long you'll start seeing more american-asian couples... You ladies better get with it! haha

I think sushi is made popular because of its nice presentation on the plate and the fanciness of the materials.

The cool thing about sushi (nigiri) is about freshness. You are basically eating right off from the sea. The whole food is prepared in a minimalistic yet artistic way on a dish. It is a healthy snack and is not highly processed fast food, which makes it a big hit for the health-conscious people.
