How is becoming a vegetarian good for the environment?!

Question: How is becoming a vegetarian good for the environment!?
Answers:
Check out www!.coolyourdiet!.org for details, but basically, meat production uses up a lot of resources, including water and land!. Cows expel massive amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, daily!. Their hooves pack the dirt, making it less likely to absorb rain!. Manure from animal industrial facilities leaks into waterways and gets in the groundwater!. It takes 10 times the fossil fuels to produce a calorie of meat than a calorie of plant food!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's absolutely wonderful for the environment!

If everyone went vegan, then we would need more cropland!. So we'd have to cut down more forests to get the available cropland displacing countless animals in the process!.

We'd also have to re-purpose land currently used for grazing!. Most grazing land is too dry for crops, so we'd have to heavily irrigate!.

Then we'd need more fertilizer and pesticides to ensure the crops grew!.

And then !.!.!.!.

Oops! Never mind!. Maybe it isn't that much better for the environment after all!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because the meat industry is very resource-intensive!. You need the land to raise the cattle!. Then you either need extra land for them to graze or you need to bring crops for them to eat, which takes food away from people!. Something like 70% of the crops produced in this country go to feed farm animals!. Cattle are often also raised in prime ecological land, such as the Amazon!. The Amazon rainforest is being cut down in order for there to be space for cow's to graze, which is horrible for the environment because forest's absorb Co2, and because it displaces many valuable species of plant and animal life!. Cattle aren't the only issue though!. Every part of the meat industry uses many, many resources!. It takes a lot to sustain all those animals!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

***A groundbreaking 2006 United Nations report found that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined!

"Becoming vegetarian is one of the most important and effective actions you can take to ease the strain on our Earth’s limited resources, protect the planet from pollution, prevent global warming, and save countless species from extinction!.

According to Dr!. David Brubaker, PhD, at Johns Hopkins University’s Center for a Livable Future, “The way that we breed animals for food is a threat to the planet!. It pollutes our environment while consuming huge amounts of water, grain, petroleum, pesticides and drugs!. The results are disastrous!.”

"The meat industry is a major cause of fresh water depletion!. According to Ed Ayres, of the World Watch Institute, "Around the world, as more water is diverted to raising pigs and chickens instead of producing crops for direct consumption, millions of wells are going dry!. India, China, North Africa and the U!.S!. are all running freshwater deficits, pumping more from their aquifers than rain can replenish!."

The great Ogallala aquifer, a resource that took a half million years to accumulate, will be depleted in less than 40 years!.

According to Ayres, "Pass up one hamburger, and you’ll save as much water as you save by taking 40 showers with a low-flow nozzle!."

THESE ARE also AN ISSUE!.!.!.

MANURE: The tens of billions of farmed animals of the world produce massive amounts of manure, which emit green house gases such as methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide!.

DEFORESTATION: Forests are being destroyed to make room for cattle to graze or to grow crops to feed livestock!. When the trees are cut down or burned, the CO2 they store escapes back into the air!.

BURNING FOSSIL FUELS: The burning of fossil fuels releases CO2, one of the primary gases responsible for global warming!. In addition to fertilizer manufacturing, the meat industry uses fossil fuels to heat the buildings that house the animals, to produce of all the crops to feed to the animals, and to transport, process, and refrigerate all of the meat!. Cornell ecologist David Pimentel estimates that animal protein demands about eight times as much fossil fuel than for a comparable amount of plant protein!.

AND WHAT ABOUT POLLUTION!?

Factory farms produce run-off that pollutes our streams and rivers, endangering not only the water supply for humans but also harming delicate eco-systems!.

A U!.S!. Senate Agricultural Committee report concluded, “The threat of pollution from intensive livestock and poultry farms is a national problem!.”

According to the EPA, over 200 manure discharges and spills from U!.S!. animal farms between 1990 and 1997 have killed more than a billion fish!. Animal feedlots can contaminate nearby well water with high levels of nitrates, which have been linked to miscarriages in humans as well as “blue baby” syndrome in infants!.

**************************************!.!.!.

Meat is murder on the enviornment!. Go veg!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because intensive animal agriculture is the world's biggest contributor to global climate change and opting out of it reduces the demand for it!. also, acres of irreplaceable rain forest are mowed down annually to make room to either graze cattle or raise grain crops to feed cattle!. It's a waste of water, too, taking upwards of 2,500 gallons of water to produce a single pound of beef protein!.

The UN's International Panel on Climate Change report named animal agriculture a bigger contributor to global warming than all forms of transportation combined!.

rohak1212: methane gas released by livestock is "suddenly" such a problem now because of scale!. In the past, people raised small number of cattle and ate small amounts of meat!. In the last 60 years, though, with the rise of factory farms, we are now breeding cattle in unprecedented numbers!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The idea is that the raising of animals uses more energy and more land!. However many people that make this statement don't know anything about farming!. I've seen an article that suggested that if we used the cattle land for grains we could feed the world!. But what they don't understand is that cattle grazing land is not good crop land, that's why they raise livestock on it!. And the livestock is fed hay, which is a by product of crop farming, they are not generally fed the actual grain!.

And lately, there's been some talk that the cows fart too much greenhouse gases, but let's face it, animals have been farting on this planet since the beginning of time, why is it a problem now!?

Basically, I don't think there's much real fact behind it, they're just trying to catch the current "green" craze and use it to promote vegetarianism!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

according to veges, it helps the enviorment by not eating things like burgers, ham or bacon, or any other animal they turn into food!. i know i couldnt do that but i do hav a couple friends who are vegetarians!. most people dont know this but, veges can also eat fish ion their diet so its not all shrubs and berries!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's not good nor is it bad!.

It's a life style that only affects the vegetarian!.

It doesn't make sense to say being a vegetarian will result in less methane in the environment because NOT eating cows will cause more methane!.

Eat cows=decrease methane!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You use a lot less water!. The UK Vegan Society's magazine carried an article a few years ago that cited a ratio of 10:5:1 for omnivore vs!. vegetarian vs!. vegan!.

There's lots of other info on their site, and also check out Viva!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

To raise cattle takes up a lot of land; that land can be put to better use by growing crops; feeding more people and allowing more oxygen into the atmosphere!. The farts, and decaying carcasses of cattle emits methane gas, which contributes to global warming!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because if you ever heard beef is made from animals!.!. And if you become a vegetarian I guess they don't have to kill as much animals!.!. But i really don't know for sure!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Cows fart!

Animals expel methane!.
Methane is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming!.

Www@FoodAQ@Com

because the meat industry is the biggest user of energy and resources!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

less meat is eatten means less death and more lives saved animal lives that isWww@FoodAQ@Com

Your not eating animalsWww@FoodAQ@Com

It reduces the number of cow farts!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Not eating animals, and of course less methane!Www@FoodAQ@Com

plants have feelings to!

stand up for plant rights!

become a meatatarian today!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Its saving animals but thats all I can really think ofWww@FoodAQ@Com

the planet needs more methane product!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

it isn't!. now, if you decided to solely eat aerosol and save the ozone, that would be good for the environment!. plants are good!. so don't turn them into poop!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
