Cooking silverside or topside of beef in slow cooker!. Can you advise please!?
I wish to cook a silverside of beef for Sunday lunch but have always found it rather dry so wondered what it would be like if I used my slow cooker!. Does anyone know for how long I need to cook it this way (the piece is just over 1 kilo in weight)!. Would it be better sliced into steaks or should it be cubed!. When do the vegetables go in if I want them all together!? Someone told me that veg take a lot longer in a slow cooker than the meat which I find unusual!. That's why I ask!. I haven't done much with my slow cooker, even though I've had it quite some time but would like to start using it properly!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
depending how much time you have, put the whole piece in!. probably take at least 4 hours, test with fork!. vegatables go in half way through!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
first, are you adding any vegetables with it!? add a carrot or two to help tenderize, and no more than 1 cup of water!. If it is dry, you are cooking too slow for too long!. I cook my beef on high for 6 hours!. Or on high for 2 hours and put on low for 8 hours more!.
Layer your veggies as follows from bottom to top!.!. carrots, potatoes, onion, celery, meat, tomatoes (optional) Mushrooms (optional) seasoning, and 1 cup of water!.
Trust me, I do it all the time!. Every sunday in fact, and sometimes during the week if I am going to be busy all day with doctors appointments!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I don't understand your cut of beef, but am guessing it is one of the tougher, less marbled cuts !.
I would sliver it into longish thin strips like for stir fry!. toss it in the slow cooker with enough broth to fill the cooker half way full!. Add a handful or two pearl barley and let the thing come to simmer!. Now add in your veggies and turn to low and go away!. You might check it once in a while to make sure it has enough liquid in it!. but other than that it will do all the cooking of this meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I always brown my meat, no matter what cut it is, on top of the stove first!.!.!.!. I like the added flavor !. Therefore, it makes no difference which side you place up !.
As for the veggies, yes they take longer, I put mine in the last half of cooking!.!.!. but if they are not done to your likeing their is always the micro!.!.!.take them out of the pot, if the meat is done, and just finish in the micro !. They will still have the same flavor !.
